Order of the University of Calgary recipients announced for 2013 May, June convocation

We are pleased to announce that five exceptional individuals will become members of The Order of The University of Calgary during the 2013 May and June convocation ceremonies. Individuals who are recognized with The Order of The University of Calgary have a history of distinguished service to the university.

Cyril Frank – May 9 afternoon for Law, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Graduate Studies

An orthopaedic surgeon, Cyril Frank has been a faculty member at the University of Calgary for almost 30 years, achieving national and international stature as a clinician-scientist. He has been a champion for improving patient care, and had a wide-reaching impact in health care policy and delivery both locally and provincially.

Donald Smith – June 11 afternoon for Arts and Graduate Studies

Donald Smith is a respected professor emeritus, a senior scholar in Native Canadian history, an esteemed biographer, and a champion for Aboriginal students at the University of Calgary. His research and his service to numerous historical organizations have helped to advance and to highlight the history of this city and of Western Canada.

Andre Buret – June 13 morning for Science and Graduate Studies

Andre Buret is an internationally renowned Canadian scientist focused on the pathophysiology of microbial-host interactions, an associate vice-president (research) and a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences. A model of community service and outreach, he has a talent for communicating the importance of science, research and innovation to students of every age from elementary to high school and beyond.

Nancy Moules – June 13 afternoon for Medicine, Nursing, Science and Graduate Studies

Nancy Moules is a professor in the Faculty of Nursing and a widely acclaimed, innovative researcher focused on pediatric oncology. She has developed a local, national and international reputation for excellence in teaching and research, and has worked tirelessly to develop a strong network of clinicians and researchers whose aim is to enhance clinical practice for families and children who have cancer.

Michael Maher – June 14 morning for Haskayne School of Business and Graduate Studies

As dean for 18 years, Michael Maher’s vision and drive helped to grow the former Faculty of Management into the well-regarded Haskayne School of Business and to strengthen ties to Calgary’s business community. He has served as a member of more than 50 management committees, boards of directors and community organizations.
