coelhoMuddying the waters: A blues history

By Gail Fredrickson

A three-part multi-media lecture series on blues history, its practitioners and its cultural significance will be presented at the University of Calgary by Dr. Victor Coelho, professor of music and chairman of musicology at Boston University.

Coelho, formerly of the University of Calgary (1986-2005), is also a blues guitarist and a member of the Rooster Blues Band, based in Calgary, who most recently toured Boston and Connecticut with Chicago blues singer Lou Pride.

The first lecture will look at the blues and its musical geography, understanding its ability to cross cultures, race and musical styles. The second lecture will focus on the mythology surrounding the blues, and the third talk will explore classic blues covers as a way to show how blues has become a normal and ever-present discourse in our culture.

The lectures will be held on June 15 at noon at the Rozsa Centre and on June 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Boris Roubakine Hall (Craigie Hall C105). They are open to the public and admission is free. For more information call 200-5376 go to
