Under construction: New ways of learning

By Andrea Purdy

The U of C is hosting a welcome back celebration for students, staff and faculty
on the first day of classes, Monday, Sept. 10.

Grab a free drink and morning snack at one of five mini stations across campus. The stations will be set up from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., or while supplies last. Updates on the University of Calgary’s capital expansion plans will be available at each of the stations.

The capital expansion plan includes the Taylor Family Digital Library, a world-leading experiential learning facility that will offer new opportunities to explore energy- and environment-related issues, the Urban Campus, as well as several other significant projects, including a new veterinary medicine facility. This summer, construction continued on the Dr. Fok Ying Tung International House, while construction of the Child Development Research Centre is nearing completion. That facility will have its official opening in October. In July, the experiential learning and energy building received $260 million in funding from the Province of Alberta.

“All of these projects are being built to one end: the creation of new and better space for high quality teaching, learning and research,” said U of C President Harvey Weingarten.

Details of the U of C’s capital expansion plan will also be provided at the KICKOFF pep rally on Friday, Sept. 7 in front of the MacEwan Student Centre and on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the SU tailgate party at McMahon Stadium.
