Running for a cause

Werklund School of Education hosts event to benefit United Way

Tuesday morning, December 6.  Dark.  And cold. Minus-something-awful.  Just too cold. Not going out for a run this morning, that’s for sure.

A couple of months ago, it was a different story.

Flash back to October 6, when the Werklund School of Education invited the campus to a fundraiser for the United Way.  It was one of the first organized events to be held in this year’s  campaign to raise money for the charity, and close to 75 people signed up to run (or walk) a campus loop.

Organizers called it the "We are all UCalgary" United Way 2.5 km or 5 km Fun Run or Walk, and set a goal of raising $5000 for the charity, with 100% of the proceeds going to the University of Calgary's United Way fundraising goals for 2016. Runners looked for sponsors, and took to social media to promote the event.

It seems like a long time ago now, but that morning dawned sunny and relatively warm.  By noon, as the racers gathered for a stretch, the temperature was a tolerable 12 to 14 degrees C—a runner will tell you that’s just about perfect.

And then, after a little fanfare, they were off.

When all was said and done, it appeared that everyone managed to complete their walk or run, and the committee had raised $6,830, 136% over their goal.

Why are we telling you this now, when the last thing you’re thinking about is stepping outside for a run?

Because, winter won’t go on forever, but the need to support our community will.

Because UCalgary is two-thirds of the way to our fundraising goal for this year, and you can help us reach that goal.

Because there is still time to give to the United Way, and there are still many, many ways for you to do that.  Visit   UCalgary’s United Way page today to find out how you can support this important charity.
