The University of Calgary extends sincere condolences to Ralph Klein’s family, friends and colleagues upon news of the former premier’s passing. In recognition of his service to the City of Calgary and Province of Alberta, the university conferred an honourary doctor of laws degree on Klein in 2011.

“We have lost a fiercely proud Calgarian and Albertan today,” said university president Elizabeth Cannon. “Ralph Klein was a dedicated champion for our province and a larger than life character. He left an indelible mark on our city and province and set the bar high for those who followed him in City Hall and the Alberta Legislature.”

“Today we lost our much-beloved ‘Ralph’ who served this city and our province for over 25 years,” said University Chancellor Jim Dinning, who served as Premier Klein’s Provincial Treasurer from 1992 to 1997. “His record and his efforts have created a wonderful legacy. He touched the lives of every single Albertan.”

The university will honour Klein by flying the Canadian flag on campus at half-mast.
