Ryan Hunter

It is with overwhelming sadness that the University of Calgary community mourns the loss of Ryan Hunter, who passed away unexpectedly in a fatal car accident on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021. Ryan was in his third year of his Bachelor of Nursing degree.

We are all saddened by Ryan’s death and send our condolences to his family and friends. Any loss of life in our UCalgary community is tragic and will have an impact on all of us. Those whose lives Ryan touched in the UCalgary community are heartbroken by the sudden loss and remember him as a kind, compassionate, and outstandingly brilliant individual who was always ready to help any of his peers.

Ryan lived his life to the fullest. He loved the outdoors, and would spend his days off skiing, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and surfing. He also loved to travel the world, visiting many different places throughout his life. He also cherished spending time with his family back in Quebec, where he grew up.

Passionate about the medical field, Ryan had been working as a paramedic in remote northern locations for many years and was dedicated to his studies in nursing.

Ryan will be greatly missed and loving remembered by his parents Heather and George Cockburn, younger sister Andrea Hunter (Miguel Rioux), nephew Gabe and niece Ruby, as well as many other family and friends, including many from the UCalgary Faculty of Nursing community who knew him and connected with him.

A celebration of Ryan’s life will be held at a future date.

The University of Calgary campus flags will be lowered to half-mast in honour of Ryan on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2021.
