Editor's note: The University of Calgary is deeply saddened by the passing of Hari Menon, an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Science who was set to join the Haskayne School of Business this September. Hari passed away on July 9, 2026. The following in memoriam is shared courtesy of his family:

Hari was a kind, thoughtful and gentle young man. He met the world with sincerity and treated everyone he knew with a quiet decency that needed no announcement. He was honest with himself and with others, and he was learning, patiently and with courage, who he wanted to become.

A student in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary, Hari was to join the Haskayne School of Business this September, a path he had chosen for himself, drawn to business and investing and curious about how the world worked. He loved sport, soccer and basketball above all, training week after week, and everything to do with fitness, movement and the joy of a game played with his whole heart.

He had begun to taste independence: a motorcycle he helped pay for himself, weekend work, travel with his father to Sydney, and plans for Beijing. At home, he was happiest with his family and his beloved dog, Obi. He was loved unconditionally, and he loved unconditionally in return.

He was, above all else, a good person, and he was still becoming everything he already was.

In Hari's memory, his family has established the Hari Menon Memorial Athletic Excellence Award with EducationMatters, honouring graduating student-athletes at Ernest Manning High School who play, as he did, with kindness, integrity and whole heart.

A celebration of Hari's life was held shortly after his passing, bringing together family, friends and loved ones to honour his memory.
