Individuals associated with UCalgary test positive for COVID-19

Message to the campus community from President and Vice-Chancellor Ed McCauley

This afternoon the University of Calgary was made aware that two individuals who are associated with the Cumming School of Medicine have tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus).

These individuals are now in self-isolation. As per standard practice for all cases of COVID-19, AHS has directly contacted any individual considered exposed to these cases, and they are now also in self-isolation.

We are hopeful that the steps we are recommending everyone take in their day-to-day work here at the university – social distancing, in particular – will mean that there is no further transmission of this virus. Spaces that ill individuals have been known to be in have been thoroughly cleaned and we are following recommendations of public health experts.

This situation reminds us that we are entering a new stage in our fight against COVID-19. We can expect the number of cases that touch our institution to rise in the weeks to come.

More people – both at the university and in other walks of your life – will become infected with this illness. Our best defences are the precautions we can all take: limited exposure to large crowds, washing our hands, avoiding touching our faces and staying home if we feel ill.  For more on the steps you can take, visit

I want to emphasize to faculty and staff that we continue to support those of you who make the decision to work from home. We will provide extra training to enhance your safety and increase social distancing measures for anybody who continues to work on campus. Please work with your supervisors if you plan to stay home.

The best way to look out for each other is to look out for ourselves. Please be healthy. Thank you for your continued patience and support. We will continue to provide updates as this situation unfolds.
