In June 2013, southern Alberta experienced what is being described as the worst flooding in the history of the province. 27 local states of emergency were declared and numerous communities were evacuated, displacing more than 100,000 people and resulting in damages estimated to be in the billions of dollars. 

Tumultuous times often bring out the best in people, and the volunteerism displayed throughout the flooding crisis showcased all that is special about Calgary. From people housing displaced friends and family, to strangers helping strangers clean up the mess, the stories of compassion and caring have become a defining moment for the region and the character of its residents. Many of those affected, as well as the generous volunteers who helped out -- and continue to help with recovery -- belong to the extended family of the University of Calgary.

We are proud to share some of their inspirational stories with you below, as well as details of how the university assisted the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) in the temporary housing of displaced persons and offered functional space to other organizations that were adversely affected:
