According to the Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey in 2024, 1 in 3 students reported struggling with food insecurity. To help these students and build a stronger campus, Chancellor Jon Cornish will host the first-ever Cornish for Community on March 12, 2026, bringing together business, philanthropic and community leaders in support of student well-being and food security.

Held at the Calgary Petroleum Club, the evening event will raise funds for the Student Food Security Fund and marks a milestone moment for Cornish, serving as the capstone event of their tenure as Chancellor. A Canadian Football Hall of Famer and respected community leader, Cornish has made student success and well-being a central focus throughout their leadership at UCalgary.

“As I approach my final year as Chancellor, I’m filled with gratitude for the transformation this experience has brought, and excitement for the continued impact we can make together,” says Cornish. “Cornish for Community reflects that purpose: bringing people together to ensure our students have the support they need to thrive.”

Food insecurity can affect academic performance, mental health and overall well-being. At UCalgary, this issue is being addressed through the Student Food Security Fund, which supports initiatives that make nutritious, affordable food more accessible to students.

Proceeds from Cornish for Community will support programs delivered through the Campus Food Hub, a centralized space that offers low-cost meals, subsidized groceries and meal kits. These initiatives are designed to reduce barriers to food access while preserving dignity and choice, helping students focus on their studies rather than worrying about their next meal.

Cornish for Community is designed as both a fundraising and community-building experience. Guests will enjoy a thoughtfully curated evening featuring gourmet takes on student food classics, paired with live entertainment, while learning more about the real and lasting impact of their support. This event offers an opportunity for the broader community to respond in a meaningful way by investing in solutions that directly support student success.
