It’s shaping up to be another busy year at the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business! Leadership is relevant in every profession and as Haskayne’s leadership centre, it is our job to provide you with diverse evidence-based opportunities to learn leadership, practice and enhance your leadership capabilities.

Many of our programs will be offered online this year to accommodate changes required by COVID-19.

Here are a few of our leadership development opportunities for students:

BMO MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Mentoring is an important part of leadership development and an important step in the professional and personal growth of mentors and mentees. The BMO Mentorship Program gives students the opportunity to learn from business professionals, through six one-on-one meetings between September and April. The program is available to all Haskayne undergraduate (entering year two or above) and graduate students.

The 2020-2021 mentorship program will be going virtual and we are re-opening the mentee applications for BComm and MBA Students! Applications will open August 31st and close on Sept 9th at 1:00 pm.

MBAs can apply here.

BComms can apply here.

MMgmts can apply here.

We are also introducing a leadership development through mentoring research study that is running parallel to the 2020/2021 BMO Mentorship program. For more information, visit the CCAL website here or contact mentorship@haskayne.ucalgary.ca.

LUNCH with LEADERS

The 2020-2021 Lunch with Leaders will be going virtual! This program brings together an experienced senior leader and a small group of six to eight students to engage in a conversation addressing challenges, successes and leadership lessons. It is about the power of conversation within the room and, more importantly, to help shape and inform the students’ own leadership identity. For more information, contact leadership@haskayne.ucalgary.ca.

EMBEDDED CERTIFICATE in LEADERSHIP STUDIES (ECLS)

The Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies (ECLS) gives undergraduate students the opportunity to explore the foundations of leadership and build the leadership behaviours required of future leaders. By adding this six-course embedded certificate, students can explore leadership issues through diverse perspectives and enhance their technical knowledge learned through discipline-specific studies. Completion of the ECLS will appear on student’s official parchment.

Students will apply their knowledge of leadership through experiential learning, practicing evidence-based influence and networking behaviours and by participating in mentorship (as a mentee and a mentor). Students enrolled in the program will learn to implement gained skills and perspectives to apply leadership behaviours, in the community, business, education or political spheres.

Students can add the ECLS to their degree program by applying for a change in program starting October 1, 2020. Core courses will be launching in Fall 2021, students are encouraged to start working towards the program requirements by enrolling in their electives this academic year. HASKAYNE ADVENTURE LEADERSHIP

Taking advantage of the University of Calgary’s proximity to some of the most amazing mountain terrain in the world, the Haskayne Adventure Leadership Program is revolutionizing student experience by offering specialized programs that take students beyond the classroom. The suit of Haskayne Adventure Leadership programs includes both for-credit courses and not-for credit programs. More information on Haskayne Adventure Leadership programs can be found here.

Inner Leadership

The Inner Leadership program is a non-credit extra-curricular program offered twice a year during traditionally stressful periods of the academic calendar. The Inner Leadership program draws from leadership, wellness and self-development with mindfulness meditation and Chi Kung (QiGong) practices. Participants cultivate core capabilities to become centered, present and more fully available under challenging circumstances. This program will be going virtual in Fall 2020. For more information, contact leadership@haskayne.ucalgary.ca.

CCAL PEER NETWORK

First-year business students enrolled in SGMA 217 will have the opportunity to engage with CCAL through the CCAL Peer Network and start their leadership development journey. The CCAL Peer Network is a series of five one-hour sessions during the SGMA 217 tutorial time. The tutorials will include individual and group-based activities to help students start to develop the leadership behaviours that will help them throughout their degree and beyond their time at university.

Meet other first-year students and start to build your leadership skills and capabilities. Sessions will be held virtually, details for participation will be sent through D2L. Contact leadership@haskayne.ucalgary.ca for more information.

JARISLOWKY FELLOWSHIP in BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The Jarislowsky Fellowship in Business Management started in 2006 and has been connecting senior-level professionals with MBA and EMBA students ever since. The aim is to expose students to a holistic perspective to business through community involvement. It is an opportunity to explore current topics and have meaningful discussions with other students and industry leaders. Since the fellowship was founded, there have been 13 executives who have shared their expertise and connections with students at the Haskayne School of Business. The portfolio of Jarislowsky events is open to MBA and EMBA students only. You can contact leadership@haskayne.ucalgary.ca for more information.
