Engineer and writer Wade Edward Philpott was born in Sunnyside, Washington, in 1918. Son of
Chester E. Edwards and Mary Ream Edwards. Adopted by his aunt,
Viola Ream Philpott, and uncle, George Austin Philpott, in 1921,
and name was changed from Chester Wade Edwards to Wade Edward
Philpott. Graduated in engineering from Ohio Northern University.
Worked on the design of printing calculators and business
machines. Married Myra Given in 1941. In 1947, W. Philpott was
left paralyzed in a shooting accident and during his
hospitalization became interested in recreational mathematics.
From 1951 on he developed puzzles (Multimatch) and games (Sweep).
Published work in the Journal of Recreational Mathematics. Died in 1985.
Fonds consists of puzzles, computer programs, articles, works
by other authors, correspondence between W.E. Philpott and various
persons including Martin Gardner, Harry L. Nelson, Joseph S. Madachy.
Donated by Myra G. Philpott in 1987.
