John Bastedo was born in Oxford County, Ontario, in 1824. His father's family was of United Empire Loyalist stock; his mother was the first white woman born in Oxford County.
Item is typescript (carbon copy) by Alberta Bastedo Coutts (Mrs. George Coutts) of extracts, 1850-1896, from diary of J.G. Bastedo. Entries for 1850-1859 describe J.G. Bastedo's journey overland to the California gold rush and life as a prospector in the gold fields. Also includes some genealogical information about the Bastedo family.
