Physical travel isn't required in order to have a global learning experience: intercultural learning and engagement with the global community can be done remotely.
Many of UCalgary's partner institutions around the world offer online programs that are available for any student to independently participate. These programs can include paid courses, public lecture series, open-access learning resources, and even remote field schools!

Hong Kong University
HKU Summer Institute
*Deadlines extended: July 3 (4pm, Calgary time) & July 5 (10am, Calgary time). See application instructions under "Program details".
Students can attend 1 - 3 remote learning programmes at the HKU Summer Institute. Programmes range from Hong Kong culture & media studies to finance/economy, AI, sciences, and multimedia production.

Some programmes will transfer back as credit to your UCalgary degree; exact transfer must be discussed with your academic advisor, and you will need a Letter of Permission. Others are not for credit, however, you will receive a certificate from HKU.
Deadline to apply: July 3 & 5, 2020
Dates/Tuition: Varies for each programme. Many are 1-2 weeks in July/August, approx. CAD $1000-2000, but please check the HKU website - see "Program summary" section above for links. Note that UCalgary students get an extra 10% off the tuition fee!
- You must first submit the UCalgary application form (click here and search for: "University of Hong Kong Online Summer Program") before 4pm on July 3 - this is so that we can inform HKU you are applying as a UCalgary student and receive the discount.
- You must then submit the HKU online application (information on the application process is here and the application itself is found here) before 10am on July 5 (midnight Hong Kong time).
Online European Studies Summer School

Offered by LMU (Germany's #1 university), this program gives students a unique introduction to the European Union, from the historical roots of European integration from an economic community to a political union, to modern EU crises due to external developments including migratory movements, Brexit, and the global financial crisis.
In an interdisciplinary learning environment you will boost your knowledge on Europe and the EU in particular, supervised by established researchers who motivate you to work on your own research topic. LMU offers two different options: you can either intensify your knowledge on the EU by joining three weeks of European Studies classes, or alternatively, you may study the EU for three weeks and then join German Language classes for a further three weeks.
- Option 1: European Studies - Intensive (July 13 - July 31)
- Option 2: European Studies (July 13 - July 31) + German Language Classes (August 3 until 28)

This program is for 6 ECTS, equivalent to 1 UCalgary course (3 units). Exact credit transfer must be discussed with your academic advisor.
Deadline to apply: June 30, 2020
Dates: July 13 - 31, 2020 (note the German language class is August 3 - 28, 2020, which can be taken in addition to the July European Studies course or separately)
Tuition: Students pay tuition to UCalgary for 1 course at your normal tuition rate.
Summer of Ideas
Deadline to apply: ASAP before mid-July
Infosys invites students to join their Summer of Ideas, an 8 week international ideathon powered by Wingspan. Students can work independently or with a team curated by Infosys on solutions from a range of themes, including Internet of Things, cyber security, live enterprise, and blockchain. Teams receive mentorship from Infosys technical and business staff, access to Infosys learning resources, and have an opportunity to present their work to industry leaders.
This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and master’s students in computer science, data science, and mathematics, but applications from all disciplines are encouraged.
Infosys is a global consulting and IT services leader in next-generation digital services and consulting, enabling enterprise with an AI-powered core and empowering business with agile digital at scale. The Summer of Ideas program was created to help the global student and academic community overcome the loss of internship and summer learning opportunities as a result of the disruption caused by COVID-19.
Deadline to apply: ASAP. To apply, student should fill out the form on the Infosys website and then forward their resume (using UCalgary email address) to Infosys_SOI@infosys.com. Infosys will send details and timelines with next steps.

University of Amsterdam
Summer School Online
This program is a collection of resources intended as an introduction to what the University of Amsterdam's normal summer school would be like. It includes mini-lectures, podcasts, interviews, and recommended readings on a wide range of topics (sustainable cities, immigrant rights activism, addiction studies, and more). There are also resources for learning about the city of Amsterdam and Dutch culture.
Freie University Berlin
Digital Lecture Series
No deadline, although some lectures require advance registration
This program is a series of lectures offered by FUB professors. There are two categories:
- German language lectures require advance registration and proof of meeting the prerequisite - minimum B1 level German language. These lectures are livestreamed with participation (audio/video).
- Subject course sessions are recorded and posted on the Freie University website & YouTube page, available for anyone to watch.
No credit is awarded for participation in these lectures.
Deadline to apply: None, however, advance registration is required for German language lectures
Dates: Every Wednesday between June 3 - August 12, 2020

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso
No deadline, but advance registration is required
This is a series of online seminars hosted by PUCV academics, directors, and local Chilean politicians. Seminars begin on June 30 and are held irregularly through the rest of the summer. Topics include climate action, social responsibility, and more. There is also a weekly discussion series about social innovation, every Tuesday in July & August, held at 3pm Calgary time.
Note: These seminars are held primarily in Spanish.

Southern Denmark University
SDU International Summer School
Deadline to apply: June 1 (4pm, Calgary time)
This program allows international students to choose from any of SDU's online summer courses. (Pay close attention to the website - some courses are taught on campus!) Online courses are available in business, engineering, physics, and computer science.
The credit awarded on this program is not enough to transfer back as credit to your UCalgary degree, however, you will receive a transcript from SDU.
Deadline to apply: June 1, 2020
Dates: August 3 - 14, 2020
*note: in order to be exempted from paying tuition, you must submit both the SDU application form (click here) AND the UCalgary application form (click here and search for program name: "Summer Exchange University of Southern Denmark"). These have to be submitted before midnight Danish time (4pm Calgary time).
University of Amsterdam
Multidisciplinary Online Course
Deadline to apply: June 14 (4pm, Calgary time)
This program allows international students to take up to 4 courses online. Course topics are in the humanities/social sciences with an emphasis on culture.
3 courses must be taken in order to receive enough credit for the equivalent of 1 UCalgary course. Exact credit transfer must be discussed with your academic advisor, and you will need a Letter of Permission from your faculty. If taking less than 3 courses, you will not receive UCalgary credit, but will still get an Amsterdam transcript.
University of Navarra
Spanish Language Online Summer Program
Deadline to apply: Friday, June 19 (4pm, Calgary time)
Improve your proficiency in Spanish, experience Spanish culture, develop critical thinking skills and work on your writing abilities in Spanish. Medium size of class is 12 students. Each class has a Prof. and a TA.
The course offers 6 ECTS which is equivalent to 1 UCalgary course. Please talk to your academic advisor if you are planning to transfer back credit for this program.
Spaces in B1.1 and B2 (lower intermediate and higher intermediate) still available.
Deadline to apply: June 19, 2020 (4 pm Calgary time)

Digital Summar School in Supply Chain Management & Strategic Negotiations

This program is an interactive online summer school. It teaches negotiation strategies and communication training, and also uses a business simulation to put supply chain management fundamentals into practice.
The credit awarded on this program is not enough to transfer back as credit to your UCalgary degree, however, you will receive a certificate & transcript from RWTH Aachen.
University of Western Australia
"Summer Down Under" Research Internship
Deadline to apply: June 21 (10am, Calgary time)
This program is designed for students interested in pursuing research or graduate studies in Australia. It includes research training and involvement in a UWA research project, as well as other educational and cultural events.
The credit awarded on this program is equivalent to 2 UCalgary courses. Exact credit transfer must be discussed with your academic advisor. You will also need a Letter of Permission from your faculty in order to receive credit for this program.
Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú
Online Field School Program
Deadline to apply: June 22 (11pm, Calgary time)
This program lets students work with PUCP researchers in a virtual environment. 3 field schools are available: Indigenous Rights & Legal Pluralism; Pandemics, Global History & Peruvian Society; and Peruvian History & Culture.
Peruvian History & Culture has enough credit for 1 UCalgary course. Exact credit transfer must be discussed with your academic advisor, and you will need a Letter of Permission. The others will not transfer but you will receive a PUCP transcript.

All courses run for two weeks, from August 17th-28th, with a preparatory reading week starting on the 10th, and offer 3 ECTS.
You’ll explore highlights of Berlin and get to know your international peers with our digital cultural program.
The TU Berlin Summer University Online welcomes participants to join from wherever you are in the globe, and is open to students, graduates and working professionals.
