Nankai Summer School
Nankai Belt & Road Initiative Summer School provides students with the opportunity to experience China and combines Chinese language training, the academic program, and professional development with fun excursions and cross-cultural experiences.
Study in English in China this summer at Nankai's Summer School Program. 25 minutes south of Beijing by train, Tianjin is a hub of international commerce and shipping. Explore the cosmopolitan seaport city, from the Five Great Avenues that showcase the mix of Ming and Qing dynasy buildings with a variety of European architectures from the period when half of Tianjin was ceded to foreign powers, to the modern Tianjin Eye, which is both a bridge and a ferris wheel!

Program details
The 2020 Summer School Program offers a variety of courses taught in English covering a series of interdisciplinary topics like Chinese Economics, Business, History, Law & Society, Public Policy, Chinese Language & Culture (including fun electives like Tai Chi, Chinese Paper cutting, and Folk music). In addition, field trips will be arranged for participants to experience traditional Chinese culture and explore unique perspectives on China.
- Weeks 1 & 2 = Doing Business in China, Chinese Language Training, Chinese Cultural Class, Field Trips (on weekends)
- Weeks 3 & 4 = Belt & Road Initiative and Chinese Economic Development, Chinese Language Training, Chinese Cultural Class, Field Trips (weekends)
The field trips include a variety of company visits and tours around Tianjin and to Beijing.
3 Nankai credits = 3 UCalgary units (1 half-course), so students can earn 6 units from this program.
June 24 - July 21, 2019 for 4 weeks of courses. 2020 dates are not set yet, but will likely be similar.

Costs
Students will have to pay for their tuition to UCalgary, flights and food. For Canadians, funding may cover the cost of accommodation.

Since you remain a degree seeking student at UCalgary while on exchange you remain eligible for any awards and scholarships you are eligible to receive from the university as well as student loans.The University of Calgary is a member of the Canadian Learning Initiative in China (CLIC) consortium. The China Scholarship Council(CSC) subsidizes on-campus accommodation and pays a stipend which is 3000RMB /month.
Our office administers several awards, including the Global Access Fund (based on a funding-first model where students apply prior to committing to a global learning program) and the Global Learning Award (students apply after being accepted to a global learning program; the amount varies year-to-year as the money is split among chosen recipients). Students may only receive these awards once. Please see the funding page, linked below, for more information.
The Chinese Government has scholarships available for foreign students studying in China. The CSC scholarship is available to all Canadians, and there are also CSC scholarships specifically for Alberta residents.

Students will live in Nankai's overseas student dormitory, in a double occupancy room with bathroom facilities and broadband internet.
This exchange is open to regular, full-time students in any UCalgary Faculty, who have completed at least 1 full year (10 courses) at the post-secondary level, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (B-).
Please do not approach your professor for a reference until after you have been accepted by our office.
