Global Learning Ambassador Award

UCalgary International has allocated funding for a 1 year pilot to increase and support student participation in global learning through the UCalgary Global Learning Ambassadors Program. 

The UCalgary Global Learning Ambassador Award, valued at $1,000 per grant, is awarded to select students who have completed a UCI virtual or in person global learning program and who are selected for the 2021/22 UCI Global Learning Ambassador Program.

UCI Global Learning Ambassadors will use their experience to support prospective and current global learning participants, raise awareness and interest in global learning programs, and inspire their peers and prospective UCalgary students to engage in diverse cross-cultural learning experiences worldwide.

UCI Global Learning Ambassador Program Position Description

The UCalgary Global Learning Ambassador Award, valued at $1,000 per grant, is awarded to select students who have completed a UCI virtual or in person global learning program and who are selected for the 2021/22 UCI Global Learning Ambassador Program.

•    Assisting students, staff, and faculty (virtually or in-person) with inquiries on global learning opportunities and redirecting them to advisors and other resources;
•    Assisting incoming exchange students in locating appropriate resources and redirecting them to International Student Services or other staff or resources as appropriate;
•    Participating in study abroad promotional activities, such as classroom visits, poster distribution, study abroad fairs and displays, international photo and video contest preparation, peer-to-peer support, etc.;
•    Being part of a smaller Ambassador team that concentrates on a specific objective (i.e. marketing & promotion, peer advising, global learning experience programming);
•    Creating a Student Voice project, a resource for future global learning students. This could take the form of a video, social media content, an identity guide, or giving a presentation to a department or club. Or, you can propose your own project!
•    Being a friendly and welcoming first point of contact for students and others entering the UCI office (once in-person service resumes);
•    Providing a culturally sensitive approach when helping students from diverse backgrounds;
•    Attending regular (monthly) Ambassador meetings and training sessions;
•    Contributing to the development of the Global Learning Ambassador program by completing surveys and evaluations; and
•    Other duties as assigned.

•    UCalgary degree-seeking student for Fall 2021 and Winter 2022;
•    Successful participation in an in-person or virtual UCalgary Global Learning program;
•    Ability to commit hours needed to fully participate in Ambassador responsibilities;
•    Reliability and accountability for overall responsibilities and timely correspondence with staff members and fellow Ambassadors;
•    Able to work productively in a team while demonstrating professionalism, maturity and good judgment;
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills;
•    Experience working with student groups is an asset;
•    Global Learning Ambassadors are part of the Peer Helper Program, which is meant to enhance the student experience and supplement academic learning. All Peer Helpers must demonstrate their ability to balance their academics with their extracurricular commitments, and must be in good academic standing; and
•    All Peer Helpers must be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct.

The more time and effort you put into the program, the more you will get out of it; a strong level of engagement and participation is expected. The time commitment of this position is on average 2-4 hours per week.

Your commitments include:

•    Academic year (early-September to late April) commitment required;
•    A weekly two-hour shift at the front desk (when in-person activities resume);
•    Attend two mandatory 2-hour training sessions before the start of the Fall 2021 semester;
•    Attend monthly Ambassador meetings/training sessions;
•    Assist with events and activities related to your Ambassador Sub-Group;
•    Participate in outreach activities each semester, including global learning opportunities fairs and displays, classroom visits, poster distribution, international photo and video contest preparation, peer-to-peer support, etc.; and
•    Participate regularly in the Ambassador MS Teams chat.

•    Receive training and experience while learning key skills such as professionalism, public speaking, project management and working with diverse populations;
•    Develop communication, marketing, event planning, public relations, leadership and interpersonal skills;
•    Make a difference and directly impact your university experience and the experience of other students;
•    Be immersed within a diverse group of staff and students at the University of Calgary while gaining valuable professional experience;
•    Build valuable networks by liaising with student and university groups;
•    Receive an honourarium of $1,000 and recognition on your Co-Curricular Record;
•    Become part of a vibrant Peer Helper community throughout offices across campus
•    Valuable leadership training opportunities provided to all UCalgary Peer Helpers, including training specifically for Global Learning Ambassadors;
•    Access to the CliftonStrengths for Students program; and
•    Access to a shared, on-campus Ambassador touchdown space in the UCI office (once in-person activities resume).

  1. Marketing and Promotions Focus

    The Marketing & Promotion Ambassador team will assist in organizing events and activities that promote Global Learning, and help lead a group of volunteers in these promotional efforts.


    •    Assist with the development and execution of in-person and virtual promotional events such as the Go Global Day fair and other faculty-specific global learning events;
    •    Develop and implement student-led marketing initiatives, including displays around campus, collaboration with student clubs, etc.
    •    Working with the UCI Study Abroad staff to develop marketing tools including social media, posters, flyers, etc.
    •    Coordinate all aspects of promotional classroom visits each term, including contacting and scheduling visits with professors, scheduling volunteers to conduct visits, and more;
    •    Coordinate the International Photo and Video Contests, including display making, promotional efforts, prize solicitation, entry intake, etc.;
    •    Create and regularly update displays for the Study Abroad display case in MSC;
    •    Represent the Study Abroad team at university-wide promotional events such as new student orientation, prospective student days, global learning fairs, career fairs, and more;
    •    Assist with student communications to promote global learning including social media promotion, developing blogs and/or articles for UThisWeek, the Gauntlet, and more; and
    •    Other projects and duties as assigned.


  2. Peer Advising Focus

    The Peer Advising team will provide information and guidance to students planning their global learning experiences.


    •    Provide information and guidance to interested students and others at booths around campus, during class visits and other campus and community events;
    •    Provide information in dedicated drop-in advising sessions or through general information sessions for prospective global learning students;
    •    Guide students through the process of identifying a specific location or program for their global learning experience;
    •    Provide first-hand experience and information to students going to the same location as their own global learning experience;
    •    Offer advice to help with the planning and application processes of a global learning program;
    •    Be paired with a future outgoing student to the same host institution/program and assist in answering any immediate questions they might have about studying abroad with a specific host university or in a specific country; and
    •    Other projects and duties as assigned.

  3. Globa Learning Student Experience Focus

    This team will be involved in the planning and delivery of activities that encourage the development of intercultural capacities and skills for students currently participating in global learning opportunities before, during and after their program.


    •    Create and lead activities online that help to expand program participants’ intercultural knowledge;
    •    Moderate and participate in D2L discussion boards to help foster meaningful discussion and intercultural learning;
    •    Assist program advisors in providing general information and resources to students, including UCalgary resources, UCalgary campus life, and life in Calgary, Alberta, and Canada in general. (Researching, Highlighting, Retrieving, Networking, and Outlining resources for diverse student communities);
    •    Help to plan, lead and participate in pre-departure orientation and re-entry activities;
    •    Integrate your experiences at UCalgary and on past UCalgary global learning programs into the activities that you will be facilitating; and
    •    Other projects and duties as assigned.

Global Learning Ambassador Award Guidelines

To be eligible for a Global Learning Ambassador, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a current degree-seeking UCalgary student in good academic standing
  • Must remain registered in a UCalgary degree program for the 2021/22 academic year (September – April);
  • Must have successfully participated in an in-person or virtual UCalgary Global Learning Program (i.e. exchange, group study program, internship or research)
  • Must be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct
  • Must be able to commit the time needed to fully participate in the following responsibilities:
    • Two 2-hour training sessions prior to the start of the Fall 2021 semester
    • A weekly 2-hour shift at the UCI front desk (once in-person activities resume)
    • Monthly Ambassador meetings/training sessions
    • Participation in outreach and engagement activities each semester as organized by UCI staff and/or the Global Learning Ambassadors

All University of Calgary students who meet the eligibility requirements may apply. Consideration of applications for funding is on a competitive basis. The requested Statement of Purpose will be reviewed and evaluated during the selection process.

Preference may be given to applicants who:

•    Are undertaking an undergraduate degree and/or;
•    Reflect the diversity of UCalgary’s Global Learning destinations, academic departments and student community.

The committee will not consider applicants who:

•    Are not registered in a degree program at UCalgary;
•    Submit a late application.
