Program details

Research internship placements are typically 3 months long (minimum 10 weeks, maximum 90 days).

The placement must start between May 15 and July 15, 2024. It is not possible to start the placement sooner.

When searching for internship positions, note that the dates indicated should be read as a general time-frame; the exact dates can be adjusted on an individual basis after acceptance to the internship.

  1. Costs

DAAD RISE internship participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and for the cost of all travel and living expenses. Various awards and subsidies are available for all participants - see below.

Health, accident, and liability insurance is provided by the DAAD.

  2. Funding

All eligible Canadian applicants selected to a DAAD RISE internship are considered for a $6000 (CAD) scholarship from Mitacs. The 100 highest-ranked candidates will receive this scholarship.

Participants who do not receive the Mitacs scholarship may be able to instead receive a stipend from the DAAD (€750 monthly) and an international travel subsidy.

Please note: As this program is not offered by UCalgary, participants are not eligible for the UCalgary Global Learning Award or the UCalgary Undergraduate International Research Grant.

DAAD RISE internship participants are expected to arrange their own housing. The DAAD, in cooperation with the various research supervisors/mentors at each host institution, can support you in finding reasonably-priced housing for your internship. This may range from student dormitories to city apartments.

Undergraduate students majoring in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, earth science, or physics are eligible to apply for a DAAD RISE research internship. Students must have completed two years of their undergraduate degree before the internship begins, and must be continuing their undergraduate studies after the internship ends (cannot be in the final year of their degree).

Prior knowledge of German is not required; the working language will generally be English. However, some German language knowledge may be useful for daily life outside of the internship context.

To apply, students must register in the internship database, and submit the application form for their desired internship placement. Other documents that will need to be uploaded with the application include: resume, official transcript (as well as a list of courses currently in-progress/not shown on your official transcript), a personal motivation letter, your Enrolment Verification letter, and a reference letter. Please click here for full details on the application process and required documents (note the internship database log-in button is on the right side of the page).

International travel presents challenges that may not be found when attending classes on campus. There may be a lack of resources, emergency services, hospitals, accessibility issues and/or demands on the physical and the mental self, all of which can challenge individuals when away from their usual support systems and structures. Adequate preparation is essential.

For this reason, it is imperative that you evaluate all aspects of your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual condition against the rigors of the particular global learning program you are selecting. If you are unsure of whether or not this program is a good fit for you and/or if you have any circumstances that could impede your enjoyment of the program, please contact us. Our Global Learning Advisors will be happy to assist in finding the best options for you and arrange any supports or accommodations necessary to ensure your success.

If you have or are seeking a certificate from Student Accessibility Services, you should provide this early to your Global Learning Advisor to ensure that the option that you are seeking can support your needs.

Please note: All participants must adhere to COVID-19 and other vaccination-related requirements for the destinations visited on this program. Failure to do so may have consequences such as being denied access to accommodation/housing, program activities, or to the host country itself.
