UCalgary students have access to a select number of summer programs offered through LMU Munich. All programs are designed in a cohort format with other international students and various cultural activities, trips, etc. to supplement your studies.

European Studies Summer Schools: Students can apply to one of four programs. The academic content varies slightly but is focused on European studies including EU governance, history, structure, and the complex political & institutional landscape of Europe. This summer school is ideal for students interested in international relations and political science, though students from all study areas are welcome to apply.

  1. EU Studies Summer School - Held in July/August. One course (9 ECTS). A travelling program that spends time in Vienna & Prague before returning to Munich.
  2. EU Studies Summer School + German Class - Held in July/August. Two courses (12 ECTS). After the Vienna & Prague travelling portion, students attend a German language class in Munich.
  3. EU Studies Shorter Summer School - Held in August. One course (6 ECTS). A travelling program that spends time in Vienna & Munich.
  4. Online EU Studies Summer School - Held in July/August. One course (6 ECTS). The online program is taught in a combination of asynchronous presentations and live Zoom classes.

Finance, Accounting, and Economics Summer Schools: Typically held in July/August. Several courses are available that students can choose between (6 ECTS each, may be possible to combine, each has different study dates).

German Language Program: Typically held in August. One course (6 ECTS) where students are placed in a course according to their German language level, from beginner to advanced.

Law Summer School: Typically held in July. One course (6 ECTS) which covers various topics from a German and European legal perspective. LMU requires students to have completed at least 1 year of legal studies to be eligible. UCalgary students from the JD Law program are eligible; UCalgary students from Law & Society or other degrees, please speak with the exchange advisor before applying.

Note: 6 ECTS = 3 units at UCalgary (one half-course equivalent).

The summer school is held in July and August, with variable start & end dates for each program. Please see the website for your desired program (linked in the Academic section above) for the exact schedule.

  1. Costs

This is a Fee-Paying program, which means that you will pay tuition fees to LMU directly as well as any other required program fees

You will pay a $150 placement fee to UCalgary, but otherwise you will not owe any fees to UCalgary for this program.

As long as your total stay in Europe is less than 90 days, a visa is usually not required for students travelling on a Canadian passport.

  2. Funding

Fee-paying programs might be able to obtain additional funding. Students are responsible for verifying eligibility for any funding you wish to pursue at UCalgary. If you wish to apply for student loans, please confirm eligibility with Alberta Student Aid or your responsible loans provider. If you wish to apply for our office's awards, such as the Global Learning Award, note that your program must receive at least 3 units of academic credit at UCalgary to qualify.

The below information is only applicable for the European Studies program. Please see the LMU website for details on other programs.

This program takes you to 3 different cities/countries:

In Vienna, all students will stay at the student residence OeAD-Gästehaus Sechshauser Strasse. Participants will be accommodated in double rooms. Each room is fully furnished and includes a fridge, microwave and its own ensuite bathroom. Wireless internet access is included.

In Prague, participants of the European Studies program are accommodated at the Orion Hotel. The hotel is located just 15 minutes from the historical center of the capital, and students will stay in shared apartments (double rooms) with breakfast included. All rooms are equipped with shower, toilet, WLAN, microwave, refrigerator and water heater.

In Munich, LMU accommodates students in the student residence, Studentenwerk München. Each student will have his own private bungalow. The bungalows are equipped with a kitchen where you can prepare meals. If you need kitchen utensils you need to bring them from Vienna where a set of utensils will be provided to you (cutlery, cup, plate, muesli bowl). All participants will be provided with sheets and blankets. During your week in Munich, lunch can be purchased from one of the university's cafeterias (mensas) for €3-5.

This exchange is open to regular, full-time students in any faculty at UCalgary, who have completed at least 2 full years (20 courses) at the post-secondary level, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (B-).

What's special about Munich?

Munich (founded in 1158) is the capital of Bavaria, Germany - the region is well known in Germany for its pride in cultural traditions. Bavarians often consider themselves culturally distinct from the rest of Germany - though it is often the part of Germany tourists imagine in a nostalgic light. Bavaria's traditional "Tracht" costumes which include Lederhosen and Dirndl, its annual Oktoberfest, and its traditional food and drink (try the Weißwurst!) make it a unique place to live and study. The 3rd largest city in Germany, Munich is also the economic powerhouse of the country and is a hotspot for German cinema and entertainment production.

International travel presents challenges that may not be found when attending classes on campus. There may be a lack of resources, emergency services, hospitals, accessibility issues and/or demands on the physical and the mental self, all of which can challenge individuals when away from their usual support systems and structures. Adequate preparation is essential.

For this reason, it is imperative that you evaluate all aspects of your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual condition against the rigors of the particular global learning program you are selecting. If you are unsure of whether or not this program is a good fit for you and/or if you have any circumstances that could impede your enjoyment of the program, please contact us. Our Global Learning Advisors will be happy to assist in finding the best options for you and arrange any supports or accommodations necessary to ensure your success.

If you have or are seeking a certificate from Student Accessibility Services, you should provide this early to your Global Learning Advisor to ensure that the option that you are seeking can support your needs.

Please note: All participants must adhere to COVID-19 and other vaccination-related requirements for the destinations visited on this program. Failure to do so may have consequences such as being denied access to accommodation/housing, program activities, or to the host country itself.
