German Research Funding

In May 2025 UCalgary International hosted an info session on German research funding opportunities. Watch the recording to hear from representatives of three of Germany’s premier research funding organizations — the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation — as they outline funding programs and academic exchange opportunities. The video also features insights from a German representative on how to collaborate with German consortia through Horizon Europe funding calls.

Humboldt Foundation (starts at 00:00)
The Humboldt Foundation sponsors scientists and scholars, irrespective of academic discipline and nationality, promoting academic cooperation between researchers from Germany and abroad.

DAAD (starts at 07:30)
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the world’s largest funding organization for the international exchange of students and researchers.

Horizon Europe (starts at 22:40)
Horizon Europe is the European Union’s flagship funding program for research and innovation, running from 2021 to 2027 with a budget of €93.5 billion. It supports excellence in science, tackles global challenges such as climate change, and fosters industrial competitiveness across Europe. The program promotes international collaboration and is open to participants from the EU and associated countries, including Canada.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is the central self-governing research funding organization in Germany. DFG serves the sciences and humanities, promoting research of the highest quality across all disciplines at universities and non-university research institutions.
