TENET Innovation to Commercialization (TENET i2c) Program

Transforming medical research into commercial products that improve lives. 

Dates: The TENET Innovation to Commercialization (TENET i2c) final pitch event was held on June 7th, 2019, at the 2019 INVENTURE$ Conference. 

Open to: University of Calgary researchers, clinicians, postdocs, undergraduate students, graduate students and staff across all faculties interested in transforming their health-related research into a commercial product. 

Program details: The TENET i2c program has provided funding and training to University of Calgary researchers, clinicians, postdocs, graduate students and staff to transform their health research into a commercial product.

In its early years, the competition was exclusive to ventures within the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). After an expansion of the program, the competition is now hosted by the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking to encourage participants from all faculties to apply for a chance to build their health-related research into reality. 

The competition provides teams with entrepreneurial training from Platform Calgary and matches them with mentors from Calgary’s business community. The resources provided to the participants equips them with the skills, knowledge, and industry contacts to pitch their ideas at a final event for a chance to win up to $100,000 to commercialize their product.

TENET i2c History

TENET i2c is a business pitch competition that became possible thanks to a generous donation from Ken Moore, former president of TENET Biomedical Engineering (1994-2011).

Before TENET Biomedical Engineering, Moore played professional football with the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1983 to 1994, winning two Grey Cups. During the final year of his football career, he enrolled in graduate studies at the Cumming School of Medicine under the supervision of Dr. Cy Frank and Nigel Shrive, PhD, members of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health. It was there that Moore joined a research group that founded TENET Medical Engineering. The company grew from a basic start-up to the global leader in the positioning of arthroscopic shoulder surgery, with over $30 million in annual sales to over 50 countries around the world.

After the sale of TENET Medical Engineering in 2011, Moore returned to the University of Calgary with a generous donation that supported scholarships, educational opportunities and an annual pitch competition – TENET i2c. Moore sees the societal need and value in facilitating innovative solutions to address simple and complex medical problems. The TENET i2c competition demonstrates his generosity and passion for seeing young start-up companies get a “boost-start” to get their products and services to market.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the TENET i2c competition, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have developed a commercially viable research project related to the health field
  • Translation of research into a commercial product or service must be carried out in the province of Alberta
  • The principal applicant must be a founding member and currently affiliated to the University of Calgary (i.e. faculty member, trainee, or staff).
  • All applicants must have an undergraduate degree (minimum)
  • Applicants must be able to participate in pitch training schedule
