Summer Incubator Program
The Summer Incubator Program, powered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, is a non-credit program that provides graduate student entrepreneurs with access to everything you will need to launch and grow your startup.
Dates: The program runs from May to August, with a showcase event in early September.
Open to: Up to 12 current University of Calgary graduate students will be selected to participate.
Program details: This opportunity comes at no cost to graduate students. In this unique program, The Faculty of Graduate Studies will pay you up to $8,000 along with the operational costs, to provide you the time to work on your business idea. Through this program, you retain full ownership of your business.
Apply for this non-credit course and spend your summer working on your business idea at The Inc., The Platform Calgary (formerly Calgary Technologies Inc.) incubator space.
The Inc. provides workspace and mentorship to help you move your business idea from concept to market.
This is a unique opportunity provides access to the expertise and support of The Platform’s advisors to move your business forward with training tailored to whatever stage you are at.
Time Commitment: Participants will spend 35 hours per week developing their business. This will be accomplished by spending time at The Platform in workshops, mentoring, and using the amazing co-working space, as well as outside The Platform doing customer discovery and business development.
International students will be limited to spending a maximum of 20 hours/week at Platform and will fulfill the remainder of their hours on campus.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies cover costs for training and Inc. access. The Faculty of Graduate Studies provides scholarship funds for eligible graduate students of up to $8000. Scholarship funds are released incrementally throughout the program.
This program is available to all current University of Calgary graduate students that have good standing.
The 2019 Summer Inc. program will be held in Calgary's East Village Hillier Block.
As such, international students will be limited to spending a maximum of 20 hours/week at the Hillier Block location and will fulfill the remainder of their hours on campus.
- Up to 12 graduate students will be selected to participate in the Summer Incubator Program 2019.
- A maximum of 2 students per venture team will be allowed.
- Late applications will not be accepted.
- All applications will be assessed for eligibility by the evaluation committee.
- Non-students and visiting students are not eligible to apply.
2019 Program Timing
- Application Deadline: Applications are due Monday, April 15th, 2019 by 5:00 pm MT.
- Participant Selection: Selected applicants will be interviewed shortly after the deadline date to confirm eligibility.
- Program Length: Wednesday, May 1 – Friday, August 30, 2019
- Closing Event: Selected ventures will be invited to participate in the Startup Showcase on Tuesday, September 10th, 2019, hosted at the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking.
Important Consideration for Graduate Students
Graduate students currently receiving other scholarship funding should contact the Faculty of Graduate Studies via firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss whether participating in the Summer Incubator Program will impact current scholarships.
Graduate students must speak with their research supervisors to determine if the program’s mandatory time requirement of 35 hours per week will impact their research activities.
Application and Selection
Applications are reviewed by a committee that involves staff and faculty from the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Platform Calgary.
Shortlisted students will be asked to participate in an interview conducted by a member(s) of the reviewing committee.
Applications are assessed based on the validity of the completed lean business model canvas presented, with consideration for previous activity in support of the current venture (research, customer validation, mentorship programs, seminars, conferences, pitch competitions, academic courses, etc.).

Startup Showcase: Summer Incubator Edition
Startup Showcase features student venture founders from across campus who have spent the summer months working on their startup concepts. Hear about their ventures, what they’ve learned, and what their next steps will be.
Join the celebration, network with campus and community entrepreneurs, and get to know the next generation of venture founders.
