Sponsored by TC Energy, the competition offers a $50,000 prize pool for the top innovators from UCalgary to transform their research or early stage startup into a commercial product or service. This year, the top teams from our Ascent program competed for the coveted prize of $30,000.

The competition was part of 2023 Inventures, a must-attend conference that brings together entrepreneurs, investors and innovators from various industries to share knowledge, network and explore new business opportunities. There were close to 100 people in attendance, providing significant exposure for the Hunter Hub and TC Energy as engines for innovation.

Three companies from UCalgary received prize money and took a significant step forward in commercializing their business. First prize went to Turn CO2, which uses cutting-edge technology to capture carbon dioxide generated in breweries from the fermentation process, as well as from other sources within the food and beverage industry. Other ventures acknowledged were LEWK, a startup that offers personalized and engaged online shopping experiences and BioCCM, which focuses on sustainable insulation materials derived from food and agricultural waste.

The UCalgary Ingenuity Pitch Competition provides direct support to early stage innovators looking to take the next step in commercializing their ventures. The support of TC Energy empowers UCalgary students and researchers to transform their ideas from conception to impact and create ventures that will positively benefit the Calgary community and beyond for generations to come. The next competition is tentatively scheduled for June 2024.
