How the University of Calgary’s endowment works
The University of Calgary Investment Committee, under the oversight of the Board of Governors, carefully monitors the impact of current market conditions and the performance of the university’s endowment investment portfolio.
The endowment exists to generate income which supports the programs tied to it while maintaining or growing the fund’s real value, after inflation, in perpetuity. The Investment Committee has currently set the annual allocation rate at 4.00%.
The annual investment rate of return of the University of Calgary’s endowment funds for the year ending March 31, 2022, was 5.49%. Returns were lower over the prior year due to market concerns over geopolitical events in the Ukraine and the global inflationary environment. Despite the weaker market environment, the endowment fund continued to increase in value through a conservative, risk-adjusted investment approach.
The overall market value of the endowment as of March 31, 2022 is $1,162,862,000.
