Italian Studies scholars ask questions such as: How did fascism influence Italian culture? What do Pompeii’s ruins tell us about art in ancient Italy? How has Italian food influenced Western cuisine?
Italian Studies is concerned with the multidisciplinary examination of Italian language, literature, culture, art and history. This program will allow you to improve your Italian language skills while also examining Italian art, history, music and religion. During the course of your studies, you'll gain creative thinking skills, research and analytical capabilities, intercultural awareness, and the ability to fluently communicate in Italian.
As an Italian Studies graduate you'll be prepared for career opportunities in areas such as the civil service, the non-profit sector, and the business world. A degree in Italian Studies can also be used as a stepping-stone to graduate studies or another professional degree such as law, medicine, veterinary medicine, or education.

Associate professor, Francesca Cadel, taught at Yale and Columbia prior to UCalgary. She brings a rich background in Italian literature and film, and is an expert on Pier Paolo Pasolini. Each year, Cadel proudly organizes La settimana della lingua italiana (The Week of Italian Language), as well as conferences on poetry, literature, and film with Italian authors. She also organizes exchanges and field studies in Italy. “Students make me passionate about this program and inspire me to enrich their learning. ”
