Modern Japanese Literature
Postwar and contemporary Japanese literature with an emphasis on literature of trauma and works written by minority writers.
Manga and Anime Studies
Discourses of race, ethnicity, and national identity, and their representations, in postwar manga (Japanese print comics) and Japanese pop culture more generally. Jewish identity and narratives of the Holocaust in manga. The oeuvre of Japan’s “God of Manga” Dr. Tezuka Osamu.
Videogame Studies
Japanese videogames and social issues. Racialization and gaming. The relationship between games and trauma and recovery.
Music
Digital and videogame music and related technologies, including experiential music videogames in Japan, vocaloid synthesizers and chiptunes, and music composition more broadly.
