Thesis-based program

Program overview

Practicing engineers looking to boost their skills should consider the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering (M.Eng. Thesis) degree. Much like the course-based masters, the program aims to allow practicing engineers to expand their knowledge of chemical/petroleum engineering fundamentals. But in order to accommodate the time that will be spent producing a thesis, the number of courses is reduced. As part of the program, thesis topics are related to an industrial problem that the student wishes to study in greater detail.

MEng Internship

This program offers an 8-to-16 month full-time paid internship with companies across Canada to help students gain engineering work experience in a diverse economy. Limited spots are available.

Completing this program

  • Courses (Excluding Petroleum Engineering): Topics may include mass transfer, chemical reactor design, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and more.
  • Professional Development Courses: Students take two professional development courses on communication styles, presentation skills and more.
  • International Internship: Students may participate in an international project outside of Canada for between four and six months.
  • Petroleum Engineering: Core courses include Reservoir Simulation, Secondary and Tertiary Recovering, Thermal Recovery Methods and more.
  • Thesis: Students will be required to submit and defend an original thesis.

Outcomes

Process Engineer, Petroleum Reservoir Engineer, Petroleum Production Engineer, Environmental Engineer, Software development and/or documentation for chemical process/petroleum reservoir simulation software, chemical sales.

A master of engineering degree in chemical and petroleum engineering is usually considered a final degree.

Thesis-based program

Students are required to prepare a thesis and successfully defend in an open oral defense.

Two years full-time; four years maximum

Supervisor

A supervisor is required, and must agree to oversee the student's research before admission will be granted

Admission requirements


GPA

A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.

Minimum education

A four year baccalaureate degree, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
