- The complex is named after Ross A. MacKimmie who contributed a great deal to the University as Chairman of the Board of Governors during his two terms in office.
- A rare book area on the twelfth floor is humidity controlled and specially fire protected.
- The original Library Block, completed in 1964, is a four-storey structure. Its exterior appearance was completely changed in 1975 precipitated by a need to correct a design deficiency.
