Environmental Science Programme Update

Programme Updates

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
by William Ross (Programme Director)
There are three things I wish to mention in this update: our first EVDS Ph.D. student, my own teaching at the Banff Centre and University approval for EVDS to fill a new position. The first EVDS Ph.D. student is Sharon Rempel, from Edmonton. Sharon is studying biodiversity of wheat crops and how society in general and farmers (especially women) in particular can conserve wheat biodiversity. For the Fall session Ms. Rempel is studying at the University of Alberta but she will come to Calgary for the Winter session.

I offered a course on Cumulative Effects Assessment at the Banff Centre September 30-October 4. The course, which involved Peter Duinker of Lakehead University and Sylvie Dupuis of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, will be offered again in February (2-6). Other guest presenters included Stephen Herrero and recent EVDS graduate, George Hegmann. Both did a fine job and the course appears to have been quite successful. I, of course, was a star!

With new funding for the EVDS Ph.D. programme, the Faculty has authority to fill a new position in Ecological Management and Planning. Advertising for this position, to be filled for July 1,1997,will commence immediately.
