Do Environmentalists and Economists Ever Agree?

(Why Can't We All Just Get Along?)

Mischa Kowall

This paper is an examination of the basic theoretical issues involved with the argument that economists make for trade as well as the issues that environmentalists raise against trade. Further, this paper will look at some studies and theories produced by economists that are in agreement with some environmentalist positions. By examining the theories behind both positions as well as where these theories intersect we will get a better understanding of the whole debate. Further analysis of this debate will help answer questions about how to best develop and evaluate trade policy. The strengths and shortcomings involved in the economic approach and the environmentalists approach are highlighted and recommendations are given to both environmentalists and economists that will ultimately benefit the policy process.
