Community History: Parkdale, N.W. Calgary

1960-1999

1962 Construction of St. Bernard's Church
-          This was the first development west of 37th street.

1965 Construction of the Foothills Hospital completed

1966 Construction of the former Motor Vehicles Licensing Building and the Public Works and Supplies & Services building

1970s Developer who owned the esparpment between St. Andrews Heights and Parkdale (14 acres) proposed development
-          The City and Parkdale residents opposed development.
-          After intensive legal and political battles, the developer decided against proceeding.  The City purchased the land from the developer and converted it into a park area.

1970 Shaganappi Trail was built along the west end of Parkdale

1977 Point McKay convert from a drive-in theatre to a townhouse/high-rise appartment community

1983 The current Community Association building constructed in April
-          Replaced the original building, which was constructed in 1955.
-          Total cost was $700,000, 1/2 of which was paid by the Community Association, the other 1/2 was covered by a provincial grant.

1987 Crowchild Trail was expanded to 6 lanes
-          Sound walls were extended.
-          The Riley house was bought and moved to its current location in Parkdale.
-          Some housing along the west side of Crowchild Trail demolished.

A photograph of the Riley Lodge, built by Alfred Riley along Crowchild Trail in 1911.  The house was moved in the 1980s, as a result of the widening of Crowchild Trail, to its present location in the community of Parkdale.

1990s Vacant lands adjacent to the old Motor Vehicles Branch become available for development

1990s The Lazy Loaf Cafe moved into the old Plumber's Shop

1990s The City of Calgary built an extensive park system along the Bow River corridor
-          The communities of Point McKay and Parkdale have increased access to recreational activities.
-          Point McKay and Parkdale citizens must deal with increased people and traffic in their communities.
