Project Summary
This project has uncovered many opportunities and connections relating the eco-neighbourhood design to the contemporary lifestyle.  It is true that limitations do exist in today's context, however, by pursuing these new connections can result in increased use of environmentally friendly technologies as part of mainstream neighbourhoods.  Some potential opportunities are summarized below.

1)  There exists opportunities for government incentive programs, lending institutions, and demonstration projects to provide feasible alternatives to today's highly consumptive technologies.  Currently, a significant limitation and barrier to the use of eco-technologies is the lack of markets for such products.  As markets for these technologies increase so too does the widespread social acceptance of them.   Community organization is crucial to provide a unified voice to advocate for economic incentives.

2)  The diffusion of a new innovation, including an eco-neighbourhood design, takes time and effort.  There exists many educational opportunities to help residents understand the benefits of eco-technologies and gain social acceptance for them.  The role of community stewardship and local expertise is invaluable in incorporating eco-technologies at the grassroots level and promoting community education.

3)  Living with and caring for systems that help sustain a neighbourhood is a very satisfying experience.  These new connections empower residents of a community to operate and maintain their own neighbourhood infrastructure while preserving their quality of life.  Opportunities exist for demonstration communities to share their skills with others and extend the concept of living with eco-technologies.  Participatory living is an evolutionary process that changes and transforms as new eco-technologies and knowledge are advanced.

4)  The implementation of new policies to make the eco-neighbourhood concept a reality will take a team effort.  Residents and city administrators must engage in a dialogue to identify the main issues and concerns related to the eco-neighbourhood concept.  Developing a vision and set of goals for using eco-technologies provides a framework for future development.  Policy changes at all levels of government as well as community organization (e.g., eco-neighbourhood co-op) make it possible for these innovative design concepts to become a reality.
