A Long-Term Vision | |
It has been demonstrated
that alternative technologies can be implemented in various stages resulting
in economic, social, and, environmental benefits. How is it possible
to fulfill the dream of incorporating these technologies into mainstream
society?
1) Demonstration neighbourhoods, such as Bridgeland, are important for showing the long-term benefits associated with eco-technologies. Such demonstration products are living examples that the technologies work and are a more efficient way of designing neighbourhoods. 2) Government participation via economic incentives is important for decreasing the barrier to using eco-technologies. This trend has already been demonstrated through the Government of Canada's Renewable Energy Development Initiative (REDI) encouraging the use of heating and cooling using renewable resources. As more incentives are offered, suppliers of renewable energy equipment (e.g., solar panels, solar hot water heaters, high-efficiency lighting, grey water systems, etc.) will respond to the increased demand for their products. 3) Higher demand for ecologically sustainable products and their endorsement by society creates markets that previously didn't exist. Economies of scale will allow for a more units to be produced for lower cost. Eventually, prices will become even more affordable while still offering all the social and environmental benefits associated with the technology. 4) The successful innovation diffusion
of the eco-neighbourhood concept will ultimately result in acceptance by
major lending institutions. Banks will be willing to grant mortgages
and loans for houses with proven eco-technologies, just as for a regular
home today.
