Breakfast launches Campus Fair
More than 300 alumni and their families attended the
Alumni Breakfast prior to the U of C's fifth annual Campus
Fair on Saturday, June 9. Bacon, pancakes, coffee, orange
juice and Celtic music proved to be a popular way to
start the day as alumni from all over Calgary stopped
in for a bite before heading off to Campus Fair.

Storey, Minhas bask in Arch Awards spotlight
The 2007 Arch Awards, held at the rejuvenated Grand Theatre
in downtown Calgary, was one of the U of C's best attended
alumni awards ceremony in our 41-year history. More than
300 alumni, friends of the university, and supporters of
our two Arch Award winners, Ken Storey, BSc'71, and Ravinder
Minhas, BSc'05, can claim they had the hottest ticket in
town for this June 14 gala reception.

Storey ignites passion for science in Calgary kids
While in town to accept his Arch Award, Ken Storey, BSc'71,
one of the world's most renowned experts on freezing survival,
hibernation and animal life without oxygen joined a Grade
5 class from John Costello Catholic School as they learned
about the important role played by urban wetlands.

Convocation volunteer has best job in Calgary
The 12 convocation ceremonies held on campus each year
simply wouldn't happen were it not for the efforts of nearly
100 volunteers who ensure each event runs smoothly. Judy
McCaffrey, BA'82, is responsible for ensuring the volunteer
team is in place to greet guests, answer questions, address
any safety concerns or emergencies and make it an enjoyable
experience for the fresh graduates and their families.

Groves exercises her right to work hard
Canadian speed skater Kristina Groves, BSc'04, almost
never takes a break. She spent eight years earning her
degree, won two Olympic medals in 2006, is coming off her
best season ever with nine medals and just returned from
Rwanda in support of Right To Play.

Myden hits the Hall
Top 40 alumnus and recipient of the 2006 Graduate of the
Last Decade award, Curtis Myden, BSc'99, MD'06, was recently
admitted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and was featured
in the Calgary Herald.

Hiking the Incan Trail for arthritis
Jamil Shivji, BA'00, is hiking the Inca Trail in Peru
to raise money for the Canadian Arthritis Society in
support of his sister, a sufferer of rheumatoid arthritis.
Shivji will be hiking to altitudes of 15,000 feet and
the trek will span from the Cuzco region to the ruins
of Machu Picchu. His journey begins August 8th and he
expects it be a four-day trek. Shivji hopes to raise
$8,800 for the cause.

Donations hit $100M
The U of C received more than $101 million in community
support this year, setting a new fundraising record and
significantly boosting the resources directed to improving
the student experience. The milestone places the University
of Calgary among the top three in Canada among post-secondary
institutions for annual fundraising.

UofC launches School of Policy Studies
Professor Jack Mintz, former president and CEO of the
C.D. Howe Institute and world-renowned fiscal and tax policy
specialist, will create a new School of Policy Studies
at the U of C. The school will launch with a critical mass
of more than 100 scholars working in the field and will
be an international centre of expertise in policy studies,
including government, defence, health, economics, and energy
and the environment.

Education meets need for innovation with Canada's first online
EdD in Ed. Tech.
The Faculty of Education's Graduate Division of Educational
Research has added a specialization in educational technology
to its online Doctor of Education (EdD) program. The specialization
is in response to the growing demand for specialized knowledge
of the complex role technology plays in education and training.
The online EdD is the first degree of its kind in Canada. It
is designed for teachers, instructors, IT professionals, administrators
and others interested in the advanced study of technology and
innovation and the growing demand for these in learning environments.

Know before you go: Calgary Stampede
What do a midway and mini doughnuts have to do with western
art, rodeo and stock horses? It's a contradiction that
has existed since the Calgary Stampede began and reflects
this city's wide-ranging and complex vision, history and
culture. In this public talk on July 9, the Faculty of
Communication and Culture's Dr. Max Foran will explore
these contradictions within Calgary's identity and brand,
forged by the extreme popularity of an iconic image of
a west that never was and doesn't exist in our urban, modern
city.

Education Summer Institute links research to practice
The Faculty of Education's popular Summer Institute takes place July 6-8
on campus, with an online component running July 6-21. The
annual event brings together scholars, educators, school psychologists
and others to explore a wide range of educational, psychological, workplace,
community rehabilitation and technological issues with the goal of linking
educational practice with new research.

Celebrating women's wisdom, resilience and compassion
The Women's Resource Centre will host an awards gala on October
18 to honour a U of C alumna and a female U of C student who
have demonstrated academic and professional excellence, overcome
challenges and barriers and served our community. If you know
an alumna or a current female student who have exhibited professional
and/or academic excellence and a dedication to their community,
nominate them today. Nominations are welcomed until July 15.

A U of C alumnus and neuroscientist
has back-to-back papers being published in two prestigious
international journals for his research into pain.
Gerald Zamponi, PhD'94, was published in the Journal
of Neuroscience, and then, in the renowned journal
Nature Neuroscience for his findings on pain pathways
in the brain.
