Career Workshops

Career and Job Search workshops are available on a wide variety of topics, specific to both undergraduate and graduate student needs.

Workshops are available in-person and online. In-person workshops include practical, experiential activities where students have the opportunity to apply the skills presented during the workshop. Online workshops are briefer in nature, but are a great introduction for students who are unable to attend in-person. View online or register via CareerLink.

Career Planning & Goal Setting - Online

The Career Planning & Goal Setting workshop provides a foundation for the entire Career Workshops series. Learn about the Career Planning process and how to make effective decisions. Strategies for setting short and long term goals will also be presented.

Personal Awareness & Self Assessment - Online

In this workshop, participants will learn about the VISTA model for Personal Awareness & Self-Assessment and gather meaningful information about their values, interests, skills, personality traits and ambitions. This workshop will help students develop criteria for what they are looking for in a career.

Identifying Skills & Building Competencies - Online

Marketing oneself involves understanding and selling “transferable skills” acquired during university. Students will learn about the many transferable skills they already possess and identify areas for further development of transferable skills.

Exploring Career Options for your Degree - Online

The purpose of the Exploring Career Options for your Degree workshop is to provide some strategies to gain clarity and confidence in answering the question, "What to do with my degree?" Students learn strategies for conducting occupational research, online and in-person, the value of gaining experience and growing a network.

Resumes for Results - In-Person & Online

Resumes for Results teaches students about the key components of an effective resume and how to showcase strengths and accomplishments to secure that all important interview. Students learn tips and strategies on how to write an effective cover letter targeted to the applied position. The importance of preparing and maintaining professional references are also discussed.

Job Search & Networking - In-Person & Online

The Job Search & Networking workshop provides students with the tools needed to conduct an effective job search. Learn how to prepare, target, contact and follow-up with employers. Learn about the hidden job market and strategies for expanding personal network and staying organized.

Interview Strategies - In-Person & Online

Use the Interview Strategies workshop to discover the steps to prepare for and succeed in an interview. Learn how to effectively answer interview questions and speak confidently about your skills and accomplishments. As well, learn how to effectively follow-up after the interview.

Effective Cover Letters - Online

An Effective Cover Letter helps an employment application stand out from others in the application pool. Students learn tips and strategies on how to write an effective cover letter that targeted to a specific position.

Professional CV - Online

The Professional CV workshop assists students to understand when to use a CV and what the key components of a CV are. Learn practical tips on how to create an effective CV.

LinkedIn Lab - In-Person

This hands-on lab teaches students several aspects of creating an effective LinkedIn profile and how this platform can be useful in job search and networking. Learn how to configure and optimize your account and privacy settings, develop a professional profile, join groups, research and follow companies and connect with others. You may wish to bring a digital headshot of yourself for your profile photo and your resume to help you with the experience sections of your profile.

Students who are comfortable with the above aspects of LinkedIn and already have a completed profile are encouraged to book an appointment through CareerLink with a Career Development Specialist for one-on-one support to further enhance your profile and networking strategy.
