Legacy giving is, by all accounts, one of the ultimate forms of generosity. It’s a mechanism for an individual to articulate the values they hold dear, to reflect on what has helped shape them as an individual, to promote change in the world and to leave a lasting legacy,” says Nuvyn Peters, vice-president, Development and Alumni Engagement.
“Through the Legacy Society, we have the opportunity to celebrate our dedicated supporters who envision a future beyond their lifetime, and who want to inspire generations to come.”
The University of Calgary Legacy Society, founded in 2016, was established to celebrate individuals, community supporters, alumni, faculty and staff, who have included the university in their estate plans.
Legacy gifts, or planned gifts, are a vital area in philanthropy and in particular to Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High, UCalgary’s $1.3-billion fundraising campaign.
These contributions, committed today are earmarked to support student awards and bursaries, innovative teaching and learning initiatives, and life-changing research. They also help secure the future of the institution, as well as fulfil a donor’s wish to make a lasting impact.
All legacy donors are inducted into the Legacy Society and become part of a group of extraordinary visionaries and philanthropists committed to energizing our future and transforming our world - in our lifetime and beyond.
Recently we spoke with Legacy donor, Stuart Myron, who shared that a desire to continue supporting the organizations he believes in beyond his lifetime, and to be part of creating a better world beyond himself, inspired his Legacy Gift.
“I asked myself, am I able to leave a Legacy Gift so as to maintain my annual support of this and other worthwhile causes in perpetuity? Once I said yes, the Legacy team made it easy to structure a meaningful endowment. Today, my fund is directed in support of clinical trials for Parkinson’s disease. It is my hope that one day the best medical minds will have found a cure, and my legacy will be directed to conquering other neurological disorders.”
Please consider making your commitment to the future of the University of Calgary by confirming your legacy gift today.
