Adults Drop-in

Meet other climbers and get tips on developing your climbing technique in this drop-in program for adults.  Climbing instructors will help you work out the beta to get through the crux that has you stumped as well as lead a mini lesson on a different movement skill each session.

As Cheap As You Can Get!

Learn how to safely climb so that you can take full advantage of the campus climbing wall (it’s included in your student fees!). This fun class is priced with students in mind, and covers all of the Quick Intro To Climbing skills; how to put on a harness and tie the figure eight follow through knot, as well as climbing commands and how to safely belay a climber. 
Prerequisite: none.

Outdoor Basics Lecture

In this evening lecture learn how to safely make the transition from indoor to outdoor climbing.  See what gear you need, where to go, and what to do when you get there.  Learn about hazard assessment, outdoor etiquette, and pick up some tips from our experienced guides. We will help you determine if the skills you have are enough to get you out there, and what you need to know if they aren’t!

Quick Intro to Climbing

This course will give you all the basic skills you will need to pass the belay test at any facility in the city. You will learn how to put on a harness and tie the figure eight follow through knot, as well as climbing commands and how to safetly belay a climber. The emphasis is on climbing safely while having fun.

Prerequisite: none.

Womens Quick Intro

Taught by women, this class will teach you how to properly put on a harness, tie a figure eight follow through knot, and belay a climber with a belay tube. The emphasis is on climbing safely while having fun. This program will give you the skills you will need to pass the belay test.

Complete Intro to Climbing

This comprehensive introduction teaches the essential climbing skills covered in the Quick Intro To Climbing but also includes fundamental movement skills and rappelling. Feel fully confident in your top rope skills and get high quality coaching from our experienced staff on foot work, movement skills and tips for developing your climbing technique.
Prerequisite: none.

Beginner Wall Climbing Series

This series starts off with the basics and progressively builds your knowledge and technical movement skills, allowing you to develop a complete skills base! Our experienced instructors blend instructional time with personalized coaching and plenty of time to practice. Get to know new climbing partners in a fun and informal atmosphere.
Prerequisite: none.

Womens Intro Series

This comprehensive introductory series starts with essential climbing skills covered in the Women’s Quick Intro and then progressively builds your knowledge and technical movement skills, allowing you to develop a complete skills base! Feel fully confident in your top rope skills and get high quality coaching from our experienced female staff on foot work, movement skills and tips for developing your climbing technique.

Complete Rock

This comprehensive introduction is set in beautiful Kananaskis Country and teaches the all the essential climbing skills - belaying, tying in, safety and communication. Spend a memorable day out practicing your new skills, enjoying the scenery and even try some rappelling.

Adults Summer Series 2

For Intermediate to advanced climbers, this series will help you develop your climbing technique and teach you the skills to safely lead indoors and outside. Three instructional classes indoors build up to a final class outdoors where we will emphaize safety while having the chance to apply your new skills to a realistic setting.

Advanced Climbing Series

We have up dated our curriculm and made the classes longer to give you more time to practice, deliever comprehnsive lesson sets and more opportunity to give your personalized feedback. This course is designed for intermediate to advanced climbers looking to develop advanced movement techniques, lead climbing, and a range of skills that will prepare you for sending harder and climbing outdoors. Feel confident and push your climbing to the next level!   

Prerequisite: Adults Skill Building Series or equivalent climbing experience.

Learn to Lead

Now two evening classes, this course will prepare you to successfully and safely lead bolted sport routes indoors and outside! In the first class, learn about rope management and belaying, clipping, and simple sport anchors. Then continue building your skills the second night with lead climbing strategies, more complicated anchoring systems and cleaning techniques–including rappelling!

Prerequisite: belay test and should be confident in your movement skills.

Womens Advanced Series

Building off of each participant’s current climbing abilities, our instructors are able to design an individualized program that will focus on the skills needed to advance climbers into higher grades and lead climbing with confidence. For intermediate to advanced female climbers wanting a new challenge in a fun, non-competitive environment. Prerequisite: Women’s Intro or some climbing experience.

Complete Trad

Take advantage of our unique wall to learn the basics of traditional climbing on realistic rock—indoors!  Learn and have a chance to practice gear placement, assessment and removal, anchor building with trad gear, as well as many tips and hints on staying on route and safe.

Prerequisite: belay test. Experience leading sport climbs recommended.

Rock Rescue and Hauling Systems

Stuff happens—be prepared!
Learn how to help out a fallen/injured/tired/panicked climber. The skills learned in this course have a wide variety of applications that can help you get out of a tight spot. Topics include tying off the belay, raising and lowering a person/load, counter balance rappels, ascending a rope, and more.

Prerequisite: belay test.

School of Hard Rocks

Have you plateaued in your climbing and can’t seem to make the jump into the higher grades? Are you looking to push yourself this coming climbing session?

Go back to school in this program designed for intermediate and advanced climbers looking to develop movement skills and training techniques to get stronger, increase your overall fitness and advance your climbing ability. 6 sessions of personalized climbing instruction and 6 sessions with a strength and conditioning coach.

Prerequisite: belay test.

Yosemite Series

Do you fantasize about long, hard technical climbs? This 6 week series will help you attain all of the skills you need to take on your biggest objectives. Each class focuses on a different skill set such as; anchor building, rope rescue and hauling systems, gear placement, and even aid climbing.  As the focus is on the technical side of climbing, you should already feel confident with basic rope techniques and movement.  Lead climbing experience is beneficial, but not required.

Kids Drop-In

Do you have an active child that just needs to move?  We will provide belaying, games and physical challenges for kids ages 4-10 who are looking for something different than just playing at the park. No experience necessary.

Geckos

A play-based program that introduces the young climbers-to-be to the vertical world.  Kids will learn all the basics of climbing and movement through games and activities while making friends!  Our instructors teach safety and emphasize making climbing FUN. Prerequisite: none.

Mountain Kids

This is the perfect way to introduce your child to climbing in a fun and safe environment.  The emphasis is put on learning through games and hands-on practice as kids build their climbing and belaying skills.  Prerequisite: Ages 7-9

Youth Climbing Club

Climbing is a great way to develop body awareness, coordination and strength. For youth 10-12 the focus is on learning skills and making friends. Our dedicated coaches teach key skills for climbing safely, and introduce new techniques throughout the course. No experience necessary.

Intro Youth Series

In addition to mastering the climbing basics, youth are able to build leadership and team work skills, and challenge themselves in an unfamiliar setting. Our dedicated coaches teach key skills for climbing safely, and introduce new techniques throughout the course. Designed for youth 13-17 years old taking up climbing for the first time. Prerequisite: none.

Youth Skill Building Series

Sure to challenge and engage youth that are feeling comfortable in our beginner programs, this intermediate level program allows participants to advance their movement technique and introduces new technical skills that will help prepare them for lead climbing. A blend of coaching and instruction youth will have fun while taking their climbing to the next level.

Prerequisites: Ages 9 and older, some climbing experience

Youth Advanced Series

This 6 week series builds on the skills and confidence developed in one of our introduction programs. New rope skills and sport leading will be introduced while we continue to expand on their technique and movement skills.

Climbing experience required. Ages 12-17

Youth Summer Series

Youth build their climbing skills indoors for the first 3 lessons and then get to test themselves outdoors on their final class!  There will be an emphasis on the skills that will help them tackle outdoor climbing as well as stay safe at the crags. 4 weeks.

Youth Bouldering Pass

The gymnastics hallway is terribly boring! Give your kids the opportunity to try bouldering and get them active while they are waiting for their siblings in gymnastics class or keep them moving after their class is finished. Valid for the time of the registered gymnastics participant and one hour afterwards, this pass is great for all youth looking for a fun companion sport that will help them build body awareness, strength and coordination.

Bouldering times are unsupervised by staff. All parents must accept full personal responsibility to take reasonable precautions to protect themselves and any children under their supervision from injury and not to endanger other climbers and passersby while using the University of Calgary Bouldering Wall.

Climb On Outdoor!

Reach new heights- outdoors! Climb popular beginner routes each day such as Wasootch, Yamnuska Bluffs, and Heart Creek in Kananaskis Country. Have fun as you learn basic climbing skills including how to belay, climbing calls, climbing movement, and rappelling. Instructed by ACMG guides. No experience necessary.

Climb On!

Defy gravity, reach new heights, and learn lifelong team-building and communication skills! Kids spend half the day climbing indoors and head outside the other half to play games, swim, and visit kid-friendly places in the city. Note: A bike is required for this camp (not on the first day) and campers must be able to ride a bike.

Belay Test and Orientation

In the orientation you will be become familiar with the Outdoor Centre Climbing Wall, potential hazards and the Outdoor Centre Climbing Wall Safety Code.

You will be asked to fill out a waiver; This is a legal document - it is your responsibility to read and understand everything in it and by signing you are giving up certain rights, including the right to sue. It will outline some of the risk and hazards of climbing, if you have any questions about this waiver, please bring to your lawyer for counseling before signing.

To pass the Belay Test you must successful demonstration your ability to;
  • Put a harness on
  • Tie the Figure 8 follow through knot
  • Belay with a ATC or Gri-Gri
  • Correct belay motions
  • Catch a planned and surprise fall
  • Lower a climber
  • Communicate with your  climbing partner
  • Actively demonstrate safety checks
You must have a partner to take the belay test with.  There is no teaching or instruction provided in this test; It is pass or Fail. If an Outdoor Centre staff member has reason to believe you received any instruction less than 24 hours prior to taking this exam they have the right to refuse administering the Belay test.


Youth under 14
Must have a parent or legal guardian fill out a Youth Consent Form. Youth under the age of 14 must be directly supervised at all times by a responsible adult with a current belay card and orientation.

Youth 14-18
Must have a parent or legal guardian fill out a Youth Consent Form. Youth 14-18 are permitted to climb unsupervised after successfully completing a In Gym Orientation and Belay Test in the presence of their parent or legal guardian.

Climbing Parties

Climbing + Games + Bouldering = Fun!
Party-goers defy gravity on the indoor climbing and bouldering walls. Instruction is minimal because the emphasis is put on fun!  No experience required.

Includes:  Instruction and climbing equipment (except shoes)
