The course is designed to provide a framework for understanding the geologic description of sedimentary basins, within the context of petroleum systems, with application to exploration for petroleum reservoirs. Course lectures and reading material will cover: classification of sedimentary basins and their plate tectonic settings; mechanism of subsidence and thermal history of sedimentary basins; geological and geophysical methods of basin mapping; depositional systems, basin fill and facies models; thermal maturity of source rocks; generation and migration of hydrocarbons; controls on reservoir quality in clastic and carbonate rocks; petroleum resource assessment and play concepts on basin scale. A written report, and presentation of report to class by each student, will be required on a specific topic of basin analysis. Topics will be assigned in class. Reports and presentations will be marked for final grades. Students will be expected to participate in class discussions and present some assigned lecture material. Timing for mid-term examination and individual project submission will be announced in the classes periodically.The final grade in ENCH 619.63 will be based on the following components:
