Womens Mountain Biking Series
Have fun shredding the trails you dream of riding in a fun group atmosphere! Our trained ride instructors focus on improving position and balance on the bike, developing timing and coordination, cornering, braking and shifting skills and building terrain awareness. Practice and ride at a variety of popular trail location in Calgary and Kananaskis over 5 weeks. Riders will be divided into groups based on skill and experience. No experience necessary. Intermediate Mountain Biking Series
Designed for the strong-beginner to intermediate rider with good cycling fitness, this skill-building series develops confidence on technical terrain. Using a new trail each week, emphasis will be on balance and positioning, timing and coordination, direction control, and terrain awareness, as well as achieving individual goals and skill development. Prepare for a fun and challenging session each week! Prerequisite: ability to ride most West Bragg XC loops in under 2 hours. Basic Bike Repair
Less fuss, more ride@ Learn how to efficiently fix a flat tire, clean and lubricate a dirty chain (and fix a broken one), and fix some of the common noises that bikes tend to make. ALso learn when a trip to a professional bike mechanic is warranted. Get the confidence to do-it-yourself while on the road, the trail, or your workshop. No experience necessary. 16+. Comprehensive Bike Repair Course
Using your own bike, (mountain or road) learn and practice the principles of bike repair from a professional mechanic. You'll be led hands-on through a comprehensive tune-up/overhaul—leaving no component untouched (fork and shock internals exempt). The content includes four modules (A. Basic Maintenance, B. Gears and Brakes C. Bearings and D. Wheel Truing) which will give you the knowledge to improve the performance and longevity of every component on your bike. Weekend and 4-week evening courses available. 14+. Prerequisite: none. Suspension Fork Basic Service & Hydraulic Bleeds
You've been asking for it! This next-level course is for anyone who has sucessfully completed our ABCD Weekend Bike Repair course. Learn and apply standard service procedures to rebuild your bike to an higher level (max 5 participants). Topic include: Basic suspension fork service, and hydraulic bleed procedures for Sram and Shimano, plus tips on bringing routine repairs to a higher level of accuracy and consistency. It is suggested that you bring in your bike for an assessment in advance to determine any required parts. Prerequisite: ABCD Weekend Certificate or equivalent hands-on practice. Mountain Biking 101
Get connected to your bike and the trails you want to ride! We'll practice skills and techniques that get you ready for roots, rocks, climbs and descents. In the afternoon, put it all together on great nearby trails. Bike fitting, equipment selection and minor trail-side repairs are also covered. Our instructors will get you hooked on mountain biking! No mountain biking experience necessary. Includes: instructor, course notes.
Learn how to measure spokes, lace, tension and true a practice wheel using a mix of measurement, formula, technology, and good old-fashioned 'feel'. This course is perfect for anyone who aspires to build their own wheels, or would like to replace a damaged rim on an exisiting wheel.
Prerequisite: ABCD course certificate and/or experience truing wheels. Includes: instructor, use of shop tools, in-house practice components (hub, spokes, rim), course notes and resources.
Introduction to Fat Biking
You've seen the giant tires trucking over snowy landscapes—come try fat biking on some easy, fun terrain on Nose Hill Park. Your ride guide will show you techniques for maximum traction and fun. Whether you're curious about fat bikes, or just looking for a new way to experience the beauty of winter, there is no denying the fun. Prerequisite: none. Includes: guide, fat bike rental.
Snow Slayer Series (Fat Biking)
If you love to mountain bike, and skinny skis aren't really your thing, come carve up some snow in this fat biking multi-ride series. We bring the bike and a ride-guide, you discover favourite inner-city and Kananaskis trails in a whole new way with a group of adventurous bike-loving people. Fat biking delivers the biggest snow-eating grin you'll have this winter. Prerequisite: strong beginner mountain biking ability. Includes: instructor, fat bike rental.
KAN Adventure Race
On September 29 2018, mountain bike, lake canoe, and trail run in teams of two on designated trails in the Kananaskis Barrier Lake area. This adventure race is designed for varying abilities because you go as hard as you want to. This is not an A to B style of race—there are checkpoints scattered on a map and you strategize with your teammate to get as many points as possible. Trails are activity specific so you can play to your strengths and challenge is by choice. Your only limitations are time and mode of transportation. Come out just for race day, or stay for the entire weekend (campsite booked for Fri and Sat night). Prerequisites: able to safely maneuver a canoe on flatwater, bike on intermediate trails. 14 yrs and up. Under 18 must race with adult. Includes: BBQ dinner, paddling equipment, camping fees, prizes. Race cost is per person. Ensure both partners register for the race.
Steep Terrain Refresher
In this 2-hour lesson you’ll practice mountain biking techniques that will help you to ride down technical, steep terrain with more control and less fear. Want to clean that technical climb that always makes you put a foot down? Never balk at steep descents or loose climbs again. You will soon be seeking out new technical challenges on every ride. Prerequisite: 1+ years experience mountain biking. Includes: instructor.
Women's Series Extension
Commit to the challenge of riding the best Kananaskis trails in this Women's Series extension! Coaching will focus on strengthing cycling fitness and bike-handling skills, honing climbing and descending technuques, and enjoying great singletrack. Take it to the next level and practice with others in a fun, supportive atmosphere. Prerequisite: Women's Mountain Biking Series
Hops and Drops Refresher
Ever find yourself wanting more confidence on the natural jumps and drops you find on your favourite mountain biking trails? In this 2-hour evening lesson, hone your speed, timing and balance, and practice how to stay in control with your wheels off the ground. This course is a blast for anyone who never thought they could 'get air' — you can! Prerequisite: 1+ years experience mountain biking. Includes: instructor.
Urban/Road Biking Challenge Series
Active transportation on a bike - ride everywhere, comfortably and confidently! This 3-week course for cycling beginners gets you navigating the urban environment safely and efficiently. Learn how to hop curbs, avoid traffic hazards and stay safe in vehicle traffic. Learn how to ride in a group and plan great rides. Basic roadside repairs will also be covered. Prerequisite: must be able to ride a bike.
Hydraulic Brake Bleeding (D)
Inconsistent hydraulic disc brakes? Learn the principles and processes of a brake bleed, allowing you to remove air from hydraulic systems on modern disc brakes. This 3-hour evening course lets you practice on a variety of components if your personal bike is already dialed. 14+. Prerequisite: modules A & B or equivalent. Hubs, Bottom Brackets and Headsets (C)
Dry bearings and contaminated grease can damage parts on your bike and slow you down. In this 3-hour repair course, learn how to inspect, adjust and repack or replace bearings before the damage is done. 14+. Prerequisite: none. Shifting and Braking Systems (B)
In this 3-hour bike repair course, get your shifting and braking systems working better-than-new by learning how to change cables/casing, accurately adjust derailleurs, and troubleshoot disc and rim brake systems. You'll be able to save your future tune-up dollars for coffee (or more bike parts). 14+. Prerequisite: none. Mountain Biking Core Skills 2
Learn to manual, hop, jump and navigate steep terrain more confidently, and find more grip and speed in corners. Progress your skills to perfect your balance and timing to keep the wheels moving in technical terrain. Put it all together in an afternoon ride. Come find the fun in every hill, bump and inch of dirt. Prerequisite: Core Skills 1 or 1+ years experience mountain biking.
