The Nature of Hypertext and Hypermedia

The WWW offers a unique learning environment characterized by hypertext and hypermedia.  The terms "hypertext" and "hypermedia" were coined in 1965 by Ted Nelson.   This section explores the nature of these phenomena.

Hypertext

"A kind of document that contains links to other documents. Hypertext documents can be structured in many kinds of relationships, rather than in a restricting hierarchical order or menu.  Hypertext is text that is not constrained by physical limits like printed text. On the Web, hypertext links (hyperlinks) allow connections to be made to files and information on many computers around the world. Hypertext is both the conceptual and technical foundation of the Web as a globally distributed system of information" (Irvine, 1997, Web Works).

An Introduction to Hypertext
The University of Colorado at Denver's School of Education has compiled the resources found at this site.  Resources relating to hypertext include history, theory, and educational applications.

"The method of linking and displaying computer files in more than one digital medium (text, audio, image or graphics, and video). Hypermedia expands the hypertext concept to embrace all digital  media. The Web is a hypermedia system" (Irvine, 1997, Web Works).
