Mavis Jukes

In spite of youthful dreams of becoming a cowboy, Mavis Jukes actually left her home in New York State to attend university in Boulder, Colorado, and the University of California, Berkeley to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree. After teaching for a few years, she attended law school and was admitted to the California Bar in 1979. She says that she didn't spend hours reading "under the covers with a flashlight" when she was a kid, but she "has managed to get a few good books rolling down the runway and off the ground".

Her first book, No One is Going to Nashville, was published in 1983 and recognised as an auspicious beginning for a new author, and her second book, Like Jake and Me, was a Newbery Honor book two years later. Since then she has completed more books and stories, written scripts with the McKissacks (also presenters at this conference), been an authorＪnＳesidence and presented lectures and workshops about writing. We look forward to Expecting the Unexpected(1996), and The Green Velvet Dress, which is a work in progress.

Mavis lives with her husband, sculptor and painter Robert Hudson, and their children, in Sonoma County, California.
