Leslie Reid appointed vice-provost (teaching and learning)

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Leslie Reid as the vice-provost (teaching and learning), effective Jan. 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023. 

After a robust international search, an Advisory Search Committee unanimously recommended Dr. Reid’s appointment, citing her unique capabilities to lead and enrich our teaching and learning portfolio, an area of particular focus of the Eyes High strategy, and upcoming renewals of the Academic and Research Plans. Dr. Reid is passionate about enhancing the teaching and learning experiences and outcomes for our students and staff, building an authentic learning culture and advancing our institutional reputation.

Since June 2017, Dr. Reid has been serving as the interim vice-provost (teaching and learning), stepping into a transitional role as a trusted leader and mentor. From 2012 to 2017, Dr. Reid served as associate dean, teaching and learning, in the Faculty of Science. She has been a member of the University of Calgary since 2001, when she started as a graduate teaching fellow in the Department of Geoscience.

Dr. Reid’s broad accomplishments include an Excellence in Educational Leadership Award from the University of Calgary. In 2011, she was awarded a 3M National Teaching Fellow, the most prestigious teaching award in Canada. She is a member of the Taylor Institute Teaching Academy, and in the past has co-chaired the Energizing Eyes High Strategic Oversight Committee and been a member of the Learning Technologies Task Force, Project Next Strategic Committee, Integrated Framework for Teaching and Learning Plan, and the NSSE Action Team. Dr. Reid holds a BSc from the University of Ottawa, and an MSc and PhD from the University of Calgary.

In her role over the next 5 1/2 years, she will continue to expand and diversify teaching and learning networks across campus, grow UCalgary’s reputation as a leader in educational innovation, enhance educational development, increase experiential learning opportunities for students, and advance quality teaching on our campus by advocating for practices that recognize growth, excellence, learning and risk-taking, and honour disciplinary differences.

She is an accomplished leader and has made exceptional contributions to teaching and learning over the course of her career so far, and I am confident that she will excel as vice-provost.
