Grade 8 girls take UCalgary technology for a spin

Operation Minerva spends a day in Kinesiology’s Human Performance Lab
May 11, 2017

Female researchers in the Human Performance Lab at the University of Calgary spent the day introducing their research work to students as part of Operation Minerva, a program that provides Grade 8 girls with a positive hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in Calgary workplaces.

The Operation Minerva program has been running for more than 25 years and is meant to encourage female students to continue science studies in high school, university and as a career choice. Females are under-represented in STEM career paths, but after participating Operation Minerva programs, students are more likely to pursue scientific study.

Researchers in HPL are leaders in the science of human movement, and the students had the opportunity to try the latest technology to test joints, cartilage, muscles and oxygen levels to improve performance and prevent injury.
