Wednesday, April 13 is the last day of classes at the University of Calgary for the academic year. It also marks the second annual UCalgaryStrong festival and the 57th annual Bermuda Shorts Day (BSD) — the student-led celebration of the last day of classes. BSD is exclusive to all current University of Calgary students who have obtained a wristband from the Students’ Union.

This year’s event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in parking lot 32 on the southeast corner of campus and includes a beer garden and live music performances. The event in lot 32 is organised by the the Students’ Union and sanctioned by the university. There are a number of changes to parking, road and building access, and Calgary Transit will take place that may affect students, faculty and staff.

Parking
Parking lot 32 will be closed on Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m. and will reopen on Thursday, April 14. Alternate parking lots available for use include the Arts Parkade ($10 per entry) or parking lots 10 and 11.

Road Closures
On Wednesday, Campus Drive will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Campus Place and Campus Gate. Access to lots 19, 21, 25 and 28 will only be available from 32 Ave. Access to lots 31, 33 and 34 can be made from 24 Ave. all day.

The drop-off loop in front of the Main Campus Child Care Centre will be accessible up until 9.30am. After that drop-offs/pick-ups can be made from parking lot 25, just north of the building.  Due to the road closure, entry to this area will need to be made from 32 Ave.

Building Closures
MacEwan Student Centre (MSC) will be completely closed from 4 to 6 p.m. with all food kiosks closed at that time. Urgent access to the SU Wellness Centre or parkade will be permitted at the north entrance of the MSC Atrium. Access to the Last Defense Lounge will be through the north entrance stairwell. Facilities will re-open at 6 p.m. with the exception of The Den, which will be closed for the evening.

Scurfield Hall will be closed for general access from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and there will be security at all main entry points. Security will allow anyone who has a genuine need to enter the building access.

However, anyone who is visibly intoxicated, including those who plan to attend class, will be denied entrance to the building. Security will have lists of classes that are taking place in the building.

Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) — the plus-15 link from MacKimmie to TFDL will be closed from 11 a.m. onwards to ensure the library can monitor access.

Students will be moving in and out of the beer gardens throughout the day with the bulk exiting BSD between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. During this period of time, the Education building will be closed temporarily.

Calgary Transit
Bus route #20 will be rerouted for the day, with a detour to be determined by Calgary Transit. Call 403-262-1000 or visit calgarytransit.com for more information.

UCalgaryStrong Festival
Students, faculty and staff are invited to the UCalgaryStrong Festival in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium and surrounding areas to join in a free, family friendly, end-of-year experience on April 13 from noon to 4 p.m. The festival will feature an artisan market, live performances at the community café, and a quiet reflection space in a contemplative labyrinth.

Food trucks will be located in the Rosza Centre loop. Attendees are also encouraged to participate in free active living programs offered throughout the afternoon. The schedule of entertainers, artisans and activities will be available on the UCalgaryStrong website.

Day of Service
A Day of Service, organized by the Centre for Community Engaged Learning and funded by the SU, gives students an alternate opportunity to celebrate the end of the school year. Students participating in the Day of Service make a difference in our community through volunteering with organizations around Calgary.
