The change in course registration deadlines means University of Calgary students can access support services and settle their schedule for the next school year before they leave for the summer.

The University of Calgary has moved course registration for continuing students from June to March, representing a significant shift for not only students, but also staff and faculty.

Continuing students will be assigned enrolment appointments from March 16-31, 2015 rather than in June as in previous years. March registration means students can access readily available support and academic advising while they are on campus, and faculties can provide guidance to students on advancing to the next year of their program.

“Being able to offer students advising support while they register is one of the main benefits to this change. When students used to register in June, the support we could offer them was limited because students were off campus working or back home,” said Vanessa Wood, associate registrar, Enrolment Services.

The other major benefit is that students can have their schedule for next fall and winter settled before they leave for the summer.

Students are advised to have classes pre-selected in their Student Centre, along with alternate choices in case their first choice classes are full. The other piece of advice is to meet with a program or faculty adviser if they have any questions about planning their 2015-16 schedule.

“We know that March can be a busy period for many students. It’ll be important that students prepare early for registration this year,” said Wood.

Priority registration gives students access to courses they need to graduate and provides the most choice when picking classes to progress. Students will continue to have ongoing access to registration into September, and should take the opportunity to secure course selections as early as possible.

March registration coincides with the university’s commitment to the Eyes High strategy of becoming a top-five post-secondary institution in Canada. It is a change that brings the university in line with other top Canadian institutions that have similar registration dates.

Several internal processes have been revised or are in the process of change. The deadline for students applying for change of program has been revised to Feb. 2.

Enrolment Services will also be running several workshops for advisers beginning in February. These workshops will be aimed at providing advisers with tools and processes to best support students during this transition year.
