University receives Certificate of Recognition safety designation

First post-secondary institution to earn certificate for entire organization
October 3, 2014

The university community gathered on Sept. 23 to celebrate many years of hard work and commitment to health and safety excellence at the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition (COR) safety designation. We are the first university to earn a COR, issued by the Ministry of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour, for an entire organization and the fifth largest employer in Alberta with a COR.The university also received a rebate cheque for more than $296,400 from the Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta as a result of achieving a COR. The money will go towards health and safety initiatives.

By passing an audit conducted by certified external auditors, the university has exceeded a rigorous provincial standard. Our success is due to the hard work of not only the Environment, Health and Safety team, but also the commitment of all faculties and departments.

University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon was pleased to accept the COR safety designation at the ceremony.

“The Environment, Health and Safety team has shown great leadership and ongoing support in enhancing the standard of health and safety at the University of Calgary,” said Cannon. “Earning a Certificate of Recognition showcases our institution’s exceptional occupational health and safety management system and its seamless integration throughout the university.”
