The University of Calgary’s Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) has received recognition from the Students’ Union for outstanding achievement in the area of student support.

On May 2, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources) Tom Hickerson received a Presidential Citation from the Students’ Union at the annual Colour Night ceremony.

“We've seen incredible work from Libraries and Cultural Resources this past year, particularly in the vein of supporting students and making the library as user-friendly as possible,” said Raphael Jacob, outgoing Students’ Union president. “The Taylor Family Digital Library is now open until 11 p.m. every night of the school year and this has had a significant impact on the student experience.”

In addition to extending library hours, Libraries and Cultural Resources has implemented other initiatives such as Peer Roamers, which involves student volunteers lending assistance with writing, searching for items in the library and giving directions.

“We’re proud of our close connection to students and it’s at the heart of all of our activities here on campus,” explains Vice-Provost Tom Hickerson. “Everything we do is tied to our goals of enhancing the learning experience, providing unique opportunities for students and maintaining work spaces that are welcoming and productive.”

Hickerson was instrumental in the conception and design of the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL), which has developed a reputation as one of the most innovative academic libraries in North America.

LCR operates all branch libraries across campus, archives and special collections, two art galleries, the University of Calgary Press and facilities in the TFDL, including more than two dozen workrooms where students collaborate on projects and create multi-media presentations.

Also at the Colour Night celebration, incoming Students’ Union (SU) president Jarett Henry and the 72nd Students’ Legislative Council (SLC) were sworn into office. Presidential Citations were also awarded to four others: Camille de Lacy, coordinator of leadership and training programs for the University of Calgary; alumnus John Hickie of the University of Calgary’s Senate and the Board of Governors; graduating student Venkatachalam (Venki) Lakshmanan; and the general manager of the Students’ Union, Jeff Marshall.

This is the second time Libraries and Cultural Resources has received a Presidential Citation during Tom Hickerson’s time as vice-provost. In 2010, LCR was recognized by the Students’ Union for its contributions to the student experience.
