United Way campaign smashes fundraising goal
Community spirit on campus evident in $407,000 collective donation

As we wrap up another United Way workplace campaign, the University of Calgary United Way Cabinet would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the unit co-ordinators, volunteers, cabinet members, students, faculty and staff for your hard work, commitment and enthusiasm for this year’s campaign. Needless to say, we also thank everyone who made a donation to this worthy cause this year. We are proud to be part of such a caring community.
We are excited to announce we not only met our fundraising goal of $360,000, we far surpassed it! We have achieved incredible success with our campaign, raising a record $407,000 (to date) for the United Way of Calgary and Area.
What’s more, having set a goal of 130 lead donors, we were able to meet that goal—in large part thanks to the spirited leadership of Jackie Sieppert, dean of Social Work.
The university’s commitment and dedication to this year’s campaign will be recognized at United Way’s 15th Annual Spirits of Gold Awards gala on Feb. 12, where we have been nominated in three different categories.
The theme of this year’s campaign was Everyday Heroes. As we discovered, our campus community is filled with thousands of everyday heroes who donated their time, talent and community spirit. We have shown how powerful our impact can be when we come together and choose to make a positive change in our lives, our community and our city.
Our students, faculty and staff rallied together—making pledges, logging numerous volunteer hours, and throwing multiple fundraising events. Through their vision, leadership and generous contributions, members of our university community were able collectively to make a very real difference in our city, creating meaningful and measurable change that will benefit countless individuals.
It is this kind of achievement and dedication to community that will propel us to realize the university’s strategic direction—Eyes High—to become one of Canada’s top five research universities by 2016, grounded in innovative learning and teaching and fully integrated with the community of Calgary.
Change truly has started here — on our campus with each and every one of you. Thank you for this outstanding achievement.
