The participation of nitrogen / oxygen-derived reactive activated species in the initiation and support of many pathological conditions (such as hypertension, diabetes, neuro-degenerative diseases and several inflammatory processes) is well characterized and is currently being considered a potential focus of pharmacological intervention for effective treatment of these diseases.

Main interests:
  1. To study the production and control of nitric oxide, superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite anion during endotoxemia, periodontal disease, hypertension, diabetes and multiple sclerosis in experimental animal models.

  2. To investigate the production, control and expression of endogenous inhibitors of the enzyme nitric oxide sintase in the above mentioned animal models.

  3. To study the free radical dependent changes in contractile / relaxing response of vascular and muscular tissues obtained from the inflammation models cited above.

  4. To evaluate the effects of new anti-inflammatory therapeutic alternatives on blood pressure, vascular reactivity and leukocyte-endothelium interaction.
