Vaccine may treat deadly dysentery.
Millions of children in developing countries could eventually be saved by a vaccine being developed at the University of Calgary.

At least 100,000 people die and millions are sickened by amoebic dysentery every year.

Although most amoebas are harmless, one type  ̶̶  Entamoeba histolytica  ̶̶  attacks the stomach.

"Once you get an invasion into your intestines, you get this bloody diarrhea, and it doesn't end there," said Kris Chadee, a researcher at the UofC.

Kristina HansenCongratulations to Dr. Kristina K. Hansen (Dr. M. Hollenberg's lab in collaboration with Drs. Vergnolle and Sherman) winner of the Pfizer Post-doctoral Prize for best publications in a given year at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Hansen's work published in 2006,  described both in a first-author PNAS manuscript and in a second-author JBC manuscript, has  identified serine proteinases (trypsin-2 and tissue Kallikreins 5, 6 and 14) that can play roles in vascular and gastrointestinal diseases by regulating the G-protein-coupled receptor family of Proteinase-activated receptors (PARs 1, 2 and 4).  In the PNAS paper, proof of principle is provided to indicate that the inhibition of the PAR-activating enzymes can prevent the development of infectious colitis.  The work therefore has both therapeutic and theoretical implications for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal pathophysiology.
