Research
The interaction
between basic and clinical research is critical for the understanding of the
pathophysiology of gastrointestinal diseases. Collaboration between basic
scientists and clinical investigators can provide answers to important clinical
problems. The research currently conducted in my lab (GI Research Lab,
Gastrocentro, Unicamp, Brazil) is focused on the effects of acute or chronic
inflammation on gastric mucosal integrity in the presence of experimental
cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. Another major research
interest is centered on the role of eosinophils in the pathogenesis of Crohn’s
disease and ulcerative colitis. We are currently investigating how eosinophil
activation in peripheral blood, followed by migration to intestinal tissues, can
contribute to the pathogenesis and disease activity in IBD. |
